Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to identify and respond to the needs of clients who may be experiencing domestic and family violence, including responding to immediate intervention and support needs.

This unit applies to health and community service workers providing services according to established organisation procedures. These workers may not be specialised family violence workers.

Identifying client needs

  • Developing rapport with clients using interpersonal communication skills

Assessing needs

  • Assessing needs based on criteria
  • Prioritising needs based on their complexity, urgency and eligibility
  • Dealing with immediate risks to safety

Week 4

Developing intervention strategies

  • Working with the client to develop strategies to address prioritised physical and emotional safety of clients, their family and workers
  • Determining interventions provided by you, another colleague or services
  • Making referrals and providing clients with services’ information

Week 5

Maintaining records

  • Completing and checking case notes, reports and referrals.
  • Making sure records are maintained according to procedure.

Overview of Assessment

 

This unit has three assessment tasks consisting of 1 individual, 1 group and 1 quiz


Assessment Tasks

 

Assessment Task 1: Complete an online quiz to test your knowledge of the key issues and concepts related to working with those affected by domestic and family violence.

Assessment Task 2: Participate in a role play to assess the needs of a client, demonstrating the effective use of interpersonal skills.

Assessment Task 3: Assess the needs and develop intervention strategies for three clients based on scenarios, providing descriptions of needs and strategies in writing.
