Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to assess capacity to support people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues and to work collaboratively with the person, family and carers in developing a recovery plan.

This unit applies to work with people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) in a range of community services work contexts.

This course is delivered and assessed as a cluster with;

- Facilitate recovery with the person, family and carers CHCMHS006

Element:

1. Assess capacity to provide support to a person with co-existing mental health and AOD issues

1.1 Recognise and respond to signs indicating that a person may have co-existing mental health and AOD issues
1.2 Identify own service provision and possible agency programs or interventions suitable for a person with dual diagnosis
1.3 Assess the impact and nature of co-existing conditions on the person, including their social, financial and legal status
1.4 Work with the person to understand their readiness, motivation, priorities and goals for recovery in relation to both their mental health and alcohol and other drug issues
1.5 Research or consult with specialist services, as needed, to gather additional specific information about the relevant AOD substances and their interactions or possible impacts on someone with mental health issues
 

Performance Criteria:

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1  Dual Diagnosis practice


There are 3 parts to this task:
Part A: Optional Module 6: Gambling (Renu) is an individual task that will be completed in small groups in class time
Part B: MSE and MASCOT 04 assessments for (Akira) is an individual task that will be completed individually in your
own time
Part C: Optional Module 3 : MMS for (James) is an individual task that will be completed in small groups in class time.
Utilising this information, students will choose either Optional Module 12: Forensic or Optional Module 2: ABI to
complete as an individual task that will be completed individually in your own time.


Assessment Task 2 Recovery Planning

     There are three parts to this task:
Part A: Collaborative Work 1 (Renu – Identify and Implement Recovery Process is an individual task that will
    be completed independently in your own time using Optionl Module 10 ( Family Violence)
Part B: Intervention 2 (Akira – Facilitate Recovery) is group task that will be completed in class time using
    Optional Module 11 ( Family Impact) with supplementary work (case notes, referrals etc) required in your own
    time. 

Part C: Recovery Plan 3 (James- Complete a Collaborative Recovery Plan) is an individual task that will be
    completed as a role play in class time with supplementary work required in your own time
