Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to deliver and monitor a therapeutic program that has been developed by a physiotherapist to address the requirements of individual clients.
This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of an allied health professional.

1. Prepare for delivery of a client-specific physiotherapy program

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Obtain information from the physiotherapist about the client-specific program 1.2 Determine client availability according to organisation protocols 1.3 Gather the equipment to deliver the client-specific program, in line with client needs and specifications of the physiotherapist

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Confirm client's understanding of program based on treatment plan prepared by the physiotherapist 2.2 Obtain consent from the client before commencing the program 2.3 Follow the instructions of the physiotherapist when assisting with the positioning of client and equipment where treatment involves machines 2.4 Guide the client to complete the program as directed by physiotherapist 2.5 Recognise when client becomes distressed, in pain or communicates their desire to slow down, and change activity or stop and follow stepping down procedures outlined in treatment plan or notify physiotherapist 2.6 Provide feedback to the client to reinforce client understanding and correct application of the program 2.7 Work with client to plan any follow up sessions and dates

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Monitor 24-hour posture management and identify any adjustment requirements according to directives form the physiotherapist 3.2 Assist physiotherapist to complete active and passive movement requirements 3.3 Monitor respiratory care requirements and conduct necessary action within the prescribed treatment plan and scope of role and responsibilities as defined by the organisation 3.4 Monitor limb oedema management, conduct necessary actions within prescribed treatment plan and scope of role and responsibilities as defined by the organisation, and report any recommendations to the physiotherapist in a timely manner 3.5 Correctly position client according to client's condition, modesty and treatment or program activities and according to the directive of the physiotherapist 3.6 Talk to client about treatment or program activities and where possible seek feedback about comfort and understanding during the session 3.7 Create a treatment or program environment that encourages clients to ask questions about progress and activities 3.8 Take appropriate and prompt action in response to any indicators of adverse reaction to the program or treatment and report to physiotherapist

4.1 Provide client progress feedback to the treating physiotherapist 4.2 Report client difficulties and concerns to the treating physiotherapist before proceeding with treatment 4.3 Implement variations to the program according to the advice of the physiotherapist 4.4 Identify and manage client adherence issues, including subjective and objective reporting of client response to the program, and report to the physiotherapist in a timely manner 4.5 Report any client misunderstanding or confusion to the physiotherapist in a timely manner 4.6 Identify and note any difficulties the client experiences with the program, including biomechanical and musculo-skeletal issues, and report to physiotherapist in a timely manner 4.7 Seek assistance when client presents with needs or signs outside limits of own authority, skills and/or knowledge

Overview of Assessment

You must demonstrate Performance and Knowledge Evidence of the unit in order to be deemed competent.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment Task 1: Short answer questions

Assessment Task 2: Practical assessment

Assesment Task 3: Clinical Placement

Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement activity.

Competency based training requires you to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken.

You will be required to attend clinical placement as a part of the assessment and qualification requirement for this program.

The assessment tasks are as follows-

Written Assessment task 1.1- Short answer questions - Week12 Semester 1 (4th-8th May 2020)

Written Assessment task 1.2- Short answer questions- Week 8 Semester 2 ( 24th -28th August 2020)

Practical Assessment task 2.1- Active  & Passive ROM Week 17 Semester 1 (8th - 12th June 2020)

Practical Assessment task 2.2- Patient Transfer Week 4 Semester 2 (27th -31st July 2020)

Practical Assessment task 2.3- Use of Mobility Aids Week9 Semester 2 (8th - 11th September 2020)

Assessment task 3- Clinical placement- During 120 hours of clinical placement (Starting in October 2020)

 

All assessments must be deemed satisfactory for you to be graded competent in this course.

Other Information

Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:

 

Each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once. 

Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.

All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to  resubmission completion dates.

   

Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.

 

EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. For advice on this application please visit www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration or speak to your Program Coordinator.
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to submit by the due date (e.g. assignment, report, project etc.):
you may submit an APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK for an extension of time of up to seven (7) calendar days or less. This must be lodged with the Program Coordinator 1 working day before the original due date. If granted, you will have the opportunity to submit up to 7 days later than the original due date.
