Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use computer software and organise electronic information and data.

It applies to individuals who apply a limited range of practical skills with a fundamental knowledge of equipment use and the organisation of data in a defined context, under direct supervision or with limited individual responsibility.

3.1 Identify and replace used technology consumables in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and organisational requirements.

3.2 Carry out and/or arrange routine maintenance to ensure equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and organisational requirements.

3.3 Identify equipment faults accurately and take action in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions or report fault to designated person.


Learning Outcomes



Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.

The self-paced activities will be delivered thought various technology platforms and include your contribution to web based research and discussion threads, portfolios of evidence quizzes and interactive sessions.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated/real workplace environment.

The delivery for this course is a two-hour class every alternative week, commencing week 1 and two hours of online structured learning for the week that there is no face to face delivery. The online learning will consist of reading material within the learning hub and completing scheduled exercises.

You are expected to participate and contribute in all scheduled activities.

This cluster is delivered face to face for two-hours in weeks 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 & 15 and two hours of online structured learning for the weeks that there is no face to face delivery for a total of 16 weeks.

Overview of Assessment

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence

 Evidence of the ability to:

  • select and use technology safely and according to organisational requirements
  • access, retrieve and store required data
  • demonstrate basic maintenance on a range of equipment using manuals or help-files
  • identify and address faults according to requirements

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must:

  • outline the organisation’s work health and safety requirements
  • outline the organisation’s requirements for file naming and storage
  • explain why regular back-ups of data are done
  • list ’routine maintenance’ tasks
  • summarise the procedure for addressing equipment faults

 Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the industry capability – workplace effectiveness field of work and include access to:

  • office equipment and resources
  • electronic files and data
  • workplace documentation and equipment manuals
  • case studies and, where possible, real situations
  • interaction with others

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Feedback

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment Tasks

This course is co-delivered with the following competency:

BSBWHS201 - Contribute to health and safety of self and others

You are required to complete three tasks for this course.  You must successfully complete all three tasks to be deemed competent in this course.

Critical aspects of assessment are described above in the performance evidence for this course.

1. OHS and Technology Quiz (Week 7)

This assessment task will assess knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements, selecting and using software and processing and organising data.

2. Portfolio (Week 10)

This assessment will assess knowledge of WHS/OHS and Business Technology topics. Students have to submit activities each week (during Weeks 1-10) as indicated on the weekly schedule.

3. OHS & Technology Assignment (Week 14)

This assessment task consists of Part A and Part B

Part A will assess ability to apply knowledge of OHS policies and procedures, emergency and reporting procedures, legislative requirements, risk and hazard identification & control, and participate in WHS/OHS consultative processes.

Part B - students required to respond to a series of questions and scenarios are focused on technology and software requirements in the workplace.


Assessment Matrix

Final grades are only determined after all assessment tasks are successfully completed. The assessment matrix for the the final grade is available on Blackboard in the Assessments Folder.

Submission Requirements

You should:

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work.  An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers. For example, Callie Harvey, 324567, Task 2, OHTH5873C & OFFC5313C Health Safety & Office Tech, Page 1 of 4.

 

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days

Resubmissions (VET Programs):

If you are found to be unsuccessful in a particular Course Assessment Task (or you do not submit/attend) you will be allowed one resubmission.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. 

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
