Course Description

This course describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to participate in workplace occupational health and safety (OHS) processes to protect workers own health and safety, and that of others.

This course applies to individuals who require a fundamental knowledge of OHS to carry out their own work, which may be in a defined context under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility. This unit has broad applicability across industries and workplace contexts.

You are expected to manage your learning and undertake an appropriate amount of out-of-class independent study and research and industry guests speak about professional practice.


Details of Learning Activities

This unit applies to individuals who require a basic knowledge of WHS to carry out work in a defined context under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility, in a range of industry and workplace contexts.

 

In this course, you learn through:

 

  • working from Monona Rossel DVD
  • Lecture and discussion
  • practical exercises
  • independent research

 

Contribute to Health and Safety of self and others is delivered through episodes based on a DVD of Monona Rossel discussing WHS issues. After each episode there is class discussion and for every episode a questionnaire has to be answered in written form. The student will be expected to read and research specific content each week in order to answer a series of questionnaires, conduct risk analysis and solve WHS problems regarding home and work situations. The unit will run for 5 weeks and is 5 hours in duration

This task consists of a 2 WHS audits of the student’s general environment- home, work study etc. To discover and analyse 2 health and safety issues and to suggest possible solutions.

 

Task 2:Hazards in the Arts – Questionnaire

This task consists of viewing the Monona Rossel DVD on WHS and to answer a questionnaire on each episode

Reasonable adjustment

In assessing whether a particular adjustment is reasonable consideration should be given to:

·         the student’s disability and his/her views

·         the effect of the adjustment on the student, including effect on his/her ability to achieve learning outcomes, participate in courses or programs and achieve independence

·         the effect of the proposed adjustment on anyone else affected, including the education provider, staff and other students

·         the costs and benefits of making the adjustment.

As a result, what constitutes "reasonable" varies on a case-by-case basis and the balance is sometimes difficult to strike.  However, it is clear that education providers are not required to lower academic standards or disregard the needs staff or other students. In more complex cases discussion with the disability service will be useful. It may be useful to examine previous judgements in relation to the DDA.
