Course Description

This course introduces the skills and knowledge required to oversee the bump in/bump out process for one or more technical aspects of a production. Head technicians or floor management personnel would generally undertake this role.

1. Organise equipment and human resources.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 With reference to production documentation, determine crewing requirements and scope of work required

1.2 Identify the need for additional equipment and materials and check whether their purchase fits within budgetary guidelines

1.3 Obtain additional items promptly as required

1.4 Complete accurate inventory checks to ensure physical elements are available and ready for use

1.5 Assess risks and develop and implement hazard management plans

1.6 Roster staff to meet production schedules in line with production budget

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Liaise with production personnel to determine the most effective sequence to move and install physical elements

2.2 Identify transport requirements and organise transport accordingly

2.3 Estimate the number of people required to move equipment and advise relevant colleagues accordingly

2.4 Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on the bump in and bump out process

2.5 Document clear plans for moving and installing equipment according to organisational procedures

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Supervise the safe installation and removal of physical elements according to production requirements

3.2 Monitor progress of bump in and bump out of shows against production schedules and implement contingency plans as required to meet production deadlines

3.3 Identify and respond to problems promptly in consultation with relevant personnel

3.4 Organise storage and security of physical elements as required, including valuable items and hazardous materials

3.5 Evaluate the bump in and bump out process with relevant personnel and note areas for improvement in future productions


Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to bump in/out for screen industries including television & film having learnt to:

  • Plan for a shoot by using the corresponding floor and lighting plans
  • Communicate effectively with a production crew 
  • Observe safe work procedures and demonstrate Duty of Care
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge in the relevant area


Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions/production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

 4 Operating a more complex production (two studios) and developing contingency plans to minimise impact of multiple sets on bump in and bump out process.

 5 - 11 Assessment - Bump4of4 '24 Melbourne' productions and 'Newsline' are produced on weekly basis until the end of semester.
  18 September - Mid semester 2 week break.
 12 - 15 Assessment - Bump4of4'24 Melbourne' productions and 'Newsline' are produced on weekly basis until the end of semester.
 16 Reserved for Production Factory. This class provides an opportunity for students to get final feedback on their performance during the semester and segments are reviewed in their finished program formats.

Assessment for this course will involve demonstration of practical tasks and testing of your knowledge.


Assessment Tasks

[Graded Course]

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a grade for your final assessment task. The graded assessment task will determine your final result for this course. (Refer to myRMIT for grading rubric).

 

Ungraded Assessment Tasks

  • Bump1of4: Participate in 'Picture Me' production in the role of FM, TD, LD or AD.  Due weeks 5-8, Semester 1
  • Bump2of4: Produce Floor & Lighting Plans for your '24 Melbourne' production. Due 11th July, Semester 2
  • Bump3of4: Participate in 'Coming Clean' production in the role of FM, TD, LD or AD.  Due weeks 13, 14, 15 in Semester 1

 

Graded Assessment Task

  • Bump4of4: Participate in 'Newsline' or '24 Melbourne' productions in the role of FM, TD, LD or AD.  Productions take place in Semester 2 and tasks must be complete by week 15.
