Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and work practices as part of a small work team.

 This unit applies to workers who have a key role in maintaining WHS in an organisation, including duty of care for other workers.

 The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

1.1 Identify existing and potential hazards and record them according to workplace procedures.

 

1.2 Contribute to the development of strategies for implementing risk controls in line with workplace procedures and policies.

 

 

1.3 Implement risk controls in line with the hierarchy of risk control and workplace and legislative requirements.

 

1.4 Identify and report issues with risk controls, including residual risk, in line with workplace and legislative requirements.

Details of Learning Activities

A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
  • Written classroom tasks
  • Demonstration and classroom discussion
  • Group discussions
  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
  • Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets
  • Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard)
  • Self-managed research to support completion of assessment tasks. 


Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne).

Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.

There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory WHS regulations, relevant codes of practice and workplace procedures:

  • conducted a workplace risk assessment and recorded the results
  • provided WHS information to at least two workers
  • consistently monitored safety procedures in the day-to-day work activities required by the job role
  • completed a workplace incident report
  • followed workplace procedures for a simulated emergency situation

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Task 1: WHS Audit and Report including emergency procedures

The WHS Audit and Report Assessment will be completed by students at their working clinic. Detailed instruction and assessment criteria will be provided during student attendance to scheduled classes.  Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is Tuesday 28 February 2017.  In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully. Students will receive their feedback via the marked assessment submitted via Turnitin.

 

Assessment: Task 2 WHS Induction to staff

The WHS Induction to Staff Assessment will be completed by students at their working clinic. Detailed instruction and assessment criteria will be provided during student attendance to scheduled classes.  Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin.  Due date for submission is Tuesday 21 March 2017.  In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully. Students will receive their feedback via the marked assessment submitted via Turnitin.

 

Assessment: Task 3 Self-Reflection Portfolio

The WHS Induction to Staff Assessment will be completed by students at their working clinic. Detailed instruction and assessment criteria will be provided during student attendance to scheduled classes.  Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin.  Due date for submission is Tuesday 4 April 2017.  In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully. Students will receive their feedback via the marked assessment submitted via Turnitin.
