Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide information about infection prevention and control procedures, integrate those procedures into work practices and monitor workplace performance.

 

This unit applies to individuals working in health or direct client care contexts, who have a coordination, team leading or supervisory responsibility in relation to infection prevention and control.

A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

Teaching Schedule

The classes will be delivered on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne). Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

The following schedule is as per the timetable issued to students via email prior to their commencement, as well as on Day 1 during student induction into the program. The timetable is also provided on BlackBoard for student reference. (Please Note: timetable is subject to change at the discretion of RMIT. Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • implemented and monitored infection prevention and control policy and procedures for at least 1 work area and at least 1 team of workers, incorporating:
  • hand hygiene and hand care
  • use of personal protective equipment
  • surface cleaning
  • waste management
  • handling of potentially infectious material
  • hazard identification and risk assessment and management

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

 


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. 

 

1. HLTINF003 Infection Control Implementation and Monitoring Portfolio 

The Portfolio assessment will be completed by students at their working clinic. Students will be required to produce a portfolio based on their research on requested disease which will then lead them to train and support others in implementing and monitoring of required measures to control risks associated with this disease. The whole experience and learning content will need to be presented in their assessment task throughout variety of activities. Detailed instruction and assessment criteria will be provided during student attendance to scheduled classes.

Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is Tuesday 14 March 2017.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully.

Students will receive their feedback via Turnitin. 

 

2. HLTINF003 Infection Control Monitoring Report

Detailed report will need to be submitted to provide evidence of compliance by monitoring of measures implemented during completion of Infection Control Portfolio. Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is Tuesday 28 March 2017.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully.

Students will receive their feedback via Turnitin. 

 

3. HLTINF003 Infection Control Third Party Report

This report must be completed and signed by student workplace mentor or employer. It needs to be submitted as part of the Infection Control assessment for the purpose of providing evidence that student is able to complete and manage all listed tasks within the working environment and has followed organisational infection control policies and procedures on 3 separate occasions (as per the Unit of Competency assessment requirement)

This report is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is Tuesday 28 March 2017.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully and document must be signed.

Students will receive their feedback via Turnitin.
