Course Description

This course builds upon the knowledge and skills from fundamental Telecommunication Networks. The learner will further examine the emerging technologies which applicable to Australian Telecommunications and Electronic Communications systems. Learner will explore and integrate theoretical and practical knowledge to manage networks and resources for selected applications.

1 Plan commissioning procedures

Performance Criteria:

1.1 All parties associated with the commissioning are identified
1.2 Commissioning dates are established and confirmed with all parties
1.3 Commissioning parameters are established as per specification
1.4 Required resources are identified and organised
1.5 Test equipment is obtained and checked for suitability and accuracy
1.6 Customers affected by the work are informed of impending action and likely timing and impact
1.7 Frequency spectrum band is identified
1.8 Receipt of appropriate spectrum management agency licence is checked


2 Organise planned outages if necessary

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Affected systems, traffic and customers are identified
2.2 Outage duration is determined
2.3 Outage times are negotiated with appropriate groups
2.4 Existence of contingency plans is checked
2.5 Contingency plans are developed in the event that such a plan does not already exist
2.6 Emergency communications are provided if appropriate
2.7 A detailed list is prepared of both the areas impacted and the likely effect of such impact
2.8 Alarm management centre is notified of action planned
2.9 Authority to proceed is obtained from the relevant control centre

4 Connect transmission bearers

6 Test equipment functionality

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Distant end connection is verified with other parties
4.2 Intermediate connections are verified where required
4.3 Equipment parameters are set as per specification
4.4 Equipment is connected to the appropriate bearers
4.5 Alarms associated with the bearer and infrastructure are checked
4.6 Artificial links are installed where required and dismantled on completion of the commissioning process
4.7 Work is conducted in a manner which is safe to self, fellow workers and the public at large


7 Complete administrative tasks

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Test equipment is obtained and checked for accuracy
5.2 Both end to end and section measurements are conducted in accordance with specification
5.3 Protection switching equipment is tested for operation
5.4 Order wires and auxiliary data channels are tested
5.5 Optical fibre cable connectors are cleaned as required
5.6 All specified performance tests are undertaken to ensure operation meets all prescribed parameters and specifications as detailed in the original design brief
5.7 Tests are undertaken to ensure that there is compatibility between the hardware and the software
5.8 Performance defects are corrected or brought to the attention of designers for corrective action
5.9 Test sheets are completed as per specification and test instrument usage logged as per enterprise requirements


3 Install software

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Alarms are tested in conjunction with network management and operational groups
6.2 Traffic tests are simulated through the new installation
6.3 Specific equipment features installed are tested
6.4 Billing/charging arrangements are tested
6.5 Operations administration maintenance system is tested
6.6 Faults detected are diagnosed, repaired or escalated to the appropriate area when fault cannot be clearly diagnosed or repaired
6.7 Vendor related tests are initiated where required


5 Test hardware

Performance Criteria:

7.1 Test results are recorded as per enterprise instructions
7.2 Appropriate data bases are updated
7.3 Alarms triggered as a result of the commissioning process are rectified
7.4 Correct labelling of all equipment is checked and amendments made where required
7.5 Details of material usage is recorded and submitted to appropriate area in accordance with enterprise instructions
7.6 Job orders are completed fully and submitted to appropriate enterprise organisational unit
7.7 Design specifications are updated and returned to design area as required by enterprise requirements
7.8 Quality control procedures are followed as per enterprise policy
7.9 Installation briefs, documents and equipment manuals are handed over to operational staff in accordance with enterprise requirements
7.10 Operational staff training is undertaken where required
7.11 Transporting of tools and test equipment in suitable protective casing is organised where appropriate
7.12 All tools and test equipment are cleaned, adjusted and stored in an accessible location

Reflective Lab Journal: You will perform the exercise and write it up in a reflective lab journal.
The reflective journal will be an Online Blog created in the Learning Hub.
A reflective lab journal is a means to reflect on your learning (and learning experiences) in different ways. They are used to:
• record the development of your ideas and insights and / or those of a group in a given context and can include concepts, ideas and main points from experience and theory
• reflect upon the subject content and personal experiences as a means to increase your understanding
• analyse your own learning in and for self development.
They are used to explore situations from a personal perspective, but generally within the context of learning from your experiences. They are used to reflect on, in and for action. Common questions arising from ’reflection’ are:
• What happened? (Reflecting on actions)
• Why did it happen? (Reflecting in actions)
• What can be learnt from this for future actions? (Reflecting for actions)
The write up will be a record of your actions as they are performed and your corresponding observations.
The write up must be performed in the class as you perform the exercise, not at a later date.
o Write ups not in the Blog will not be marked.
o Write ups which are not done concurrently with the performance of the exercise will not be marked.
In general the detail of the write up must be sufficient for you to be able to comfortably perform the practical exercise a year or more lately directly from the reflective lab journal
Any difficult or tricky points should be especially noted in the reflective journal for future reference.
The neatness, completeness and the presentation of the reflective journal must be of a quality such that you would be prepared to show it to a future employer as an example of your work.
Work simulated activities: you will progressively implement a networking scenario as you would be expected to do in industry.
• You will be expected to work on a networking scenario progressively as you learn the material required for you to be able to do so.
• Leaving the work to a late stage and then rushing to complete it is bad industrial practice. It will be strongly discouraged and marked down heavily. You will be expected to meet progressive milestones in the completion of this activity.
Occupational Health and Safety:
• Conduct in lecture theatres, classrooms and laboratories will be of a standard required by OH&S legislation as applied to industry.
• You must behave in such a way as not to place the health and safety of yourself or anyone else at risk
• Covered shoes must be worn in all labs
• Thongs and sandals must not be worn in any lab

All skills and knowledge in this course are oriented towards current industry practices and technologies. An essential industry expectation is that you are responsible for your behaviour and actions. When you are in employment you will be expected to attend work on time on a regular basis, perform you work on time to an accepted standard and be responsible for what you do. Overview of Assessment

The assessment is conducted in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course according to the criteria set in the National Training Package. The students are required to undertake summative assessments that bring together skills and knowledge as follows:
 Theoretical Written assessment.
 Work Simulation Projects.
 A Pass in schedule practical exercises.

Assessment Tasks

The assessment for this course is a combination of assessable laboratory experiments via reflective journal, two practical tests, two case studies and final assessment.

You will be assessed progressively during the course. The assessments consist of:

• Reflective lab Journal - 20%
Laboratory reports, completing all the activities/practice sheets and submitting a reflective lab journal.
Each lab must be completed and reflective laboratory journals are a compulsory part of the assessment to successfully complete the course.
The first Feedback from the teacher about student’s Reflective Journal will be available in Week 5 on Learning HUB and then second feedback will appear on Week 13. The final feedback is based on all the labs.

• Laboratory Test – 30%
There would two Laboratory Tests. Each is worth of 15%.

• Case Study- 10%

• Final Assessment- 40%
The students are expected to do CCNA 2 online exams and their marks will be extracted from the online exams as below-
- Online CCNA 3&4 Chapter Exam - 10%
- Online CCNA 3&4 Final Exam - 30%
Otherwise, students need to sit for a consolidated internal written exam of 40%.

(The laboratory activities are a compulsory part of the assessment to successfully complete the course.)
In order to pass the course, you are required to obtain at least 50% in the final examination and at least 50% in the combination of laboratory tests, laboratory exercises and case study.


This course is graded using the following course grades:
0-49% is NN - Fail
50-59% is PA - Pass
60-69% is CR - Credit
70-79% is DI - Distinction
80 - 100% HD – High Distinction
The temporary grading is RW T (Result Withheld) and DEF S (Deferred Assessment Granted) are also used, but must be converted to one of the above grades within a short time after the end of the normal assessment periods. Normally the RW T grading is used where supplementary assessment is being offered. It is converted to PA if the supplementary assessment is passed or NN if it is not. It is your responsibility to follow up on any RW T or DEF S grading to ensure that you do not miss any deadlines for submission of work or sitting examinations.
