Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and
knowledge required to transfer oral records and mount
models on an articulator in the reference determined by
the operator.

All procedures are carried out in accordance with
occupational health and safety policies and procedures,
current infection control guidelines, Australian and New
Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative
requirements and organisation policy.

1: Select and prepare the articulator
2: Select and prepare materials
3: Transfer oral records to the articulator

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Apply standard precautions when receiving, handling and working on dental materials
1.2 Decontaminate occlusal registration rims according to infection control guidelines
1.3 Confirm requirements of prescription
1.4 Select and adjust articulator in accordance with prescription
1.5 Ensure all adjustable settings of the articulator are set to their neutral or zero settings
1.6 Identify the mounting method to be used
2.1 Position models and oral records in articulator for a range of prosthetic appliances
2.2 Prepare mounting materials and apply to models
2.3 Establish and secure centric records
2.4 Remove excess material and smooth to produce a neat finish
2.5 Clean equipment
3.1 Transpose records as provided
3.2 Record midline
3.3 Set and record vertical height
3.4 Set the condylar angles to the prescription given


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course the participants will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the process involved in articulating models and transferring records

Individual exercises carrying out requirements of competency.
Student experiences in workplace “on job training”

• Delivered over two sessions, as follows:
• Theory: Session time; two hours (approx)
• Theory review: Session time; one hour (approx)

Overview of Assessment

Practical exercises, presentation of competency assessment and theoretical exams are used


Assessment Tasks

The assessments in this unit are undertaken in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions in the form of practical exercises, a practical competency all of which are to be co-assessed with the following units;
HLTIN301A: Comply with Infection Control,
HLTOHS300A: Contribute to OHS Processes,
BSBCMN302A: Organise Personal Work Priorities,
BSBCMN305A: Organise Workplace Information

A theoretical exam (PASS MARK 70%), to be sat and assessed in conjunction with the competency Construct Registration Rims HLTDT304B
All forms of assessments and co-assessed units are to be competently passed to pass this unit.

Method of assessment

• Evidence of essential knowledge and understanding may be provided by:
- traditional or online (computer-based) assessment
- written assignments/projects
• Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice
• Questioning
• Staff and/or client feedback
• Supporting statement of supervisor
• Authenticated evidence of relevant work experience and/or formal/informal learning
• Role play/simulation
