Course Description

This unit covers the use of spreadsheet software to complete business tasks and produce usable complex documents. This unit is related to BSBCMN214A Create and use simple spreadsheets.

Teacher led :

Classroom &/or tutorial instruction the use of spreadsheet software to complete business tasks and produce suitable complex documents, as well as tasks associated with the elements above including the use of computers and relevant software/s, capabilities of survey methodologies and technologies in a simulated workplace environment.

Student managed:

Develop data management strategies to determine suitable sources of information for the creation of new spatial data sets to industry standards.
Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises. Individual exercises carrying out research, computations, data compilation and appraisal.
Compilation of Portfolio of examples of work, client reports, management reports and data management records.

Overview of Assessment

A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to provide evidence of:

• Knowledge and application of advanced spreadsheet features
• Formatting and design on the presentation and readability
• Literacy skills to interpret and evaluate the purposes and uses of various features of spreadsheets; use a variety of strategies for planning and reviewing own work
• Proofreading and editing skills to check for accuracy and consistency of information by consulting additional resources
• Problem solving skills to use processes flexibly and interchangeably
• Numeracy skills to collate and present data; graphs and related references
• Communication skills to follow complex oral instructions when using technology; listen to and interpret complex sequenced instructions
• Keyboarding skills
• Ability to relate to people from a range of social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and physical and mental abilities


Assessment Tasks

Assessment of this unit will involve completion of Assignments and the Evaluation of portfolio, using a checklist, of the performance of elements of competence as designated for this unit to the required standard including collection methods and techniques related to the project objectives.

Observation, using a skills checklist, of performance of elements of competence as designated for this unit to the required standard during practical fieldwork exercises within a simulated workplace project.


Assessment will require demonstration of:

• Consistence performance of each element of the unit across a representative range of applications, autonomously and to requirements
• Performance criteria for each element of competence
• Underpinning knowledge and skills specified.

Context of Assessment:

This unit is to be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.
