Course Description

This competency unit describes the skills and knowledge required for the enrollled nurse to perform nursing interventions to support the health care needs of the older person in both acute care settings and residential aged care environments.

Learning Outcomes


On completion of this learning unit participants should demonstrate skills and knowledge required for the enrollled nurse to provide nursing care and perform nursing interventions to support the health care needs of the older person in in a range of health care environments.


Details of Learning Activities

Role plays, lectures , class discussions and simulations are all utilised in the delivery of this course.


Teaching Schedule

Ten three hour sessions will be delivered throughout semester 2 for both trainee and full time groups.  See timetable on blackboard for detail.

Assessment Tasks

In order for students to be deemed Competent in skill based units, it is a requirement that student’s attend 80% of all classes in each course of study and successfully complete, to a Competent level (grade CA) a pre-clinical hurdle. Failure to meet these components may result in withdrawal from Clinical Placement.

Students are reminded that 100% attendence at  clinical placement must be achieved in order to be deemed competent in this course.

Graded assessment is via case study assignment which will be due on or before the last session of the course.

Grades for competency-based assessment and graded assessment

CAG (Pass)
General description Demonstrates basic understanding and meets minimum requirements. Presentation is not of a professional standard.
Knowledge of the topic Covers the subject matter sufficiently to answer questions and address issues.
Evidence of sufficient reading to complete the assignment
Minimum referencing is used, but not always correctly or consistently.
Adequately written to convey ideas and concepts. Structure is not always logical and there are some spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

CC (Credit)
Demonstrates sound understanding and some degree of interpretation, but lacks depth of insight. Some flaws in presentation.
Good knowledge of the subject matter with some evidence of depth and complexity. Some reflection is evident
Evidence of thorough reading and understanding of the core texts and resources.
