Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

CPCCBC5001B - Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for medium rise building projects

Course Description

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to apply structural principles to the building of medium rise buildings. The design and construction of medium rise buildings require the input of a range of skilled professionals, including architects and engineers. The building and construction professional plays a significant role within this project team and requires the ability to communicate effectively with building design professionals, and develop sound and safe practices in relation to structural procedures on site.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

CPCCBC5018A Apply structural principles to the construction of medium rise buildings

Element:

1. Apply structural principles to planning the erection or demolition of a structure.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Main structural principles that apply to the erection of
medium rise buildings are identified.
1.2 Performance characteristics of the structural elements,
including materials identified in the building’s plan, are
identified, analysed and applied to the planning of the
construction work.
1.3 Demolition of existing structures is undertaken in
accordance with legislative and planning requirements
and safe work practices.

Element:

2. Coordinate and manage site and job set-up assessment.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Processes are put in place to analyse the stability of soils
and capacity of the site to support the construction loads.
2.2 Structural requirements for retaining walls are identified in
conjunction with related industry professionals and applied
to the planning process.
2.3 Structural function and requirements for temporary
structural elements are analysed and applied to the
planning process

Element:

3. Coordinate and manage construction of footing systems.

Performance Criteria:

Performance Criteria: 3.1 Set-out of building is checked for compliance with
documented building plans.
3.2 Structural performance of footings specified in the building
plan is assessed for compliance with relevant codes and
accepted industry construction principles.
3.3 Footings, as specified in the building plan, are laid and
checked for compliance with standards and accepted
industry construction principles.
3.4 Damp coursing and provision of termite barriers and other
relevant techniques are planned, implemented and
checked in accordance with codes, standards and industry
practice.

Element:

4. Coordinate and manage structural elements of the construction process.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Technical construction principles and performance
characteristics of the construction materials are identified
and analysed in the planning of project.
4.2 Processes for the construction of structural elements are
identified and confirmed as compliant with relevant
Australian standards and codes and manufacturer
specifications, with reference to specialists as required,
and then implemented.
4.3 Building plans and relevant standards and codes are
identified and implemented to ensure appropriate
allowances have been made for plumbing, electrical
conduits and other services to be installed.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Assessment Tasks

This course is conducted in two separate parts. One is the study of residential/housing construction. The other is the study of commercial and industrial construction.

For each part there are 3 assignments which include project based assessments, and 4 learning outcomes tests. The culmination of all assessments contributes to the final result for this course.
Under special circumstances extension to assessment may be granted. Students are to follow RMIT Special Consideration Policy found in RMIT Policies and procedures link http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=3g3whh1vttr0z;STATUS=A;SECTION=19;PAGE_AUTHOR=Chancellery (unresolved)

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1- 3 – Project Based Assessment
The project based assessments will focus on different elements of the learning activities and address the students ability to both problem solve and provide meaningful solutions to the practical exercises that cover:

Housing Construction.
Commercial and Industrial construction.
The project based assessments will have a weighting of between 10 - 15% of the final overall assessment mark (final weighting will be advised by teacher).

Assessments 4 - 7 – Written Learning Outcomes Tests (closed book/ some open book if advised by the teacher of housing construction)
This written learning outcome tests will a cover elements not covered in the assignments/project based assessment.
These tests will have a weighting of 15% each of the final overall assessment mark.

The culmination of all assessments contributes to the final result for this course.
All assessments for this course must be completed to achieve CA (Competency Achieved) grade. (50% equates to being competent per assessment).
A competent grade for each assessment is required to pass this course..

Other Information

Competency requirements and Grading:

To be deemed competent students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Observation of students performing work is used to confirm competency.

All assessments for this course must be completed to achieve CP (Competent with Pass) to pass this course. In any assessment 50% equates to being Competent with Pass.
Higher gradings are available. The final grade for the course is calculated taking into account the weighting given to the separate assessments.

Gradings available are:
CP - 50 to 59 - Competent with Pass, CC - 60 to 69 - Competent with Credit, CDI - 70 to 79 - Competent with distinction, CHD - 80 to 100 - Competent with High Distinction. NYC - 0 to 49 - Not Yet Competent
