Course Description
This unit covers inspecting and monitoring cultural places and defines the standard required to: establish the cultural value and background of the place; prepare or source checklists for inspection; inspect the place to establish a schedule of maintenance and monitor site management; submit report and recommendations based on requirements of contract including a review of existing management systems; monitor surroundings to establish restoration, reclamation, modification and protection that is required in the immediate area; monitor stakeholder views for impact on cultural significance, approach to maintenance, restoration and modification, and current and proposed uses of the place or area.

Details of Learning Activities
Learning activities will consist of:
- 2 Field trips (one of 2 hours and another of full-day duration)
- In-class exercises and lectures
- Guest speakers
- Self-guided research
Teaching Schedule
The Course will be offered on Fridays during 2nd Semester, between the hours of 9.30am-12.30am.
The all-day Field Trip will take place on a Friday (check the Timetable) between the hours of 8.30am-5pm.

Assessment Tasks
The Assessment Tasks are as follows:
Assessment 1 consists of 3 Hurdle Tasks which must be satisfactorily completed for Competency to be gained in this Course. They are Ungraded (Competent / Not Yet Competent)
- Hurdle task 1: Definitions of commonly used terms in cultural heritage management
- Hurdle task 2: Identification and management od Aboriginal places and objects. (A written summary of relevant AAV mini-posters).
- Hurdle task 3: Cultural site inspection checklist. Students will develop a checklist based on accrued experience, which will be used for quick assessment of cultural sites visited on the full-day field trip.
Assessment 2 is the major assessment for this Course, and is Graded (NYC, CA, CC, CDI, CHD)
A Report on a cultural site visited on the full-day Field Trip. Elements include:
- A description of the site, including surroundings.
- An assessment of the cultural value of the site and its significance in Burra Charter terms.
- An assessment of the condition of the site, including intact or lost fabric.
- Recommendations for stabilization and future management of the site in order to maintain its significance.
- Identification of key stakeholders and a plan for monitoring their views over time.
