Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge you will require to construct immediate dentures that are constructed from clinically acceptable materials and finished suitable for insertion in the mouth . The prosthesis you construct will be replacing a patients natural dentition (teeth) with a removable appliance to be inserted in the clinic once the natural teeth have been extracted.

3.2 Arrange artificial teeth in sequence as each model tooth is removed
3.3 Adjust existing artificial teeth if necessary when commencing removal of model teeth
3.4 Contour wax surfaces

4.1 Trim and polish immediate dentures
4.2 Process surgical template
4.3 Trim and polish surgical template
4.4 Decontaminate the denture and template according to infection control guidelines
4.5 Place denture and template in a suitable container which will keep moist in accordance with infection control guidelines


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the arrangement of artificial teeth for complete prosthesis (dentures) as well as techniques for converting the wax trial dentures into a final hard acrylic suitable for wear by a patient. You will set teeth in various arrangements in accordance with a prescription and be exposed to different techniques of curing the dentures.

Teaching Schedule

The class is scheduled for delivery to the APPRENTICE group (DT2) on Monday June 1 in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory.

Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discrection of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email);

  1. DT2 - Monday - Friday (2week block)


Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the following appliances.

The TIER 2 exercises are made available if you complete all of the previous exercises and are seeking further practice prior to the assessments. The time guides for the TIER 2 exercises are reduced and require a ’self-managed approach’ to complete the exercise.

You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise
Practical exam
Theory exam


 


Assessment Tasks

You will attempt the following practical exercises under supervision of the teacher and you will be graded with either a Px (Satisfactory) or NYC (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book; in accordance with the training package elements & essential skills.

  1. F/F Open Faced Immediate Denture & Surgical Guide

The TIER 2 exercises are made available if you complete all of the previous exercises and are seeking further practice prior to the assessments. The time guides for the TIER 2 exercises are reduced and require a ’self-managed approach’ to complete the exercise. If you attempt the following practical exercises you will be graded with either a Px (Satisfactory) or NYC (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book; in accordance with the training package elements & essential skills.

  1. TIER 2 - F/F Closed Faced Immediate Denture

Upon completion of an exercise and prior to submission for assessment, all exercises undertaken in the practical classes will require you to provide a detailed reflection of your own work focussing on areas of the appliance that were successful as well as areas that could be improved upon next time.

The practical exam will take place under supervision in the simulated working environment at RMIT. The exam will take place under exam conditions and you will be given details of the requirements and assessment guidelines in the practical book available in class and on BlackBoard.

  1. PRAC EXAM - F/F Open Faced Immediate

The theory exam will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.

  1. Construct Immediate Dentures - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%


Assessment Matrix

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTDT507C/DENT5259C Construct immediate dentures
and appliances you are required to obtain a pass result (PX or CA) for the following theoretical and practical assessments that are used to measure; elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package.

  1. PRAC EXAM - F/F Open Faced Immediate

     
  2. Construct Immediate Dentures - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
     

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unit HLTDT507C/DENT5259C Construct immediate dentures. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

The scheduled dates for the assessments are as follows;

Apprentice DT2: Friday September 25th (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by November 27th 2015)

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:

Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTDT507C/DENT5259C Construct immediate dentures. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.


Assessment Appeal Process:
The Appeals Against Assessment policy and procedure applies to all coursework programs in all careers. The appeal process is staged and students are required to follow each stage in order to ensure their full entitlement to appeal is available http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/appeals


Students are required to support the learning outcomes this Unit with work based experience and/ or further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.


To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

Please note these are also WH&S requirements for laboratory safety.

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear

Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails (no nail polish)
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
