Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to use basic techniques to work with digital images.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills.
Assessment tasks are:
2 x Major projects 

Please note: All Assessment tasks need to be completed before competency is achieved. A number of tasks will be formative to show your progress and development of skills and knowledge throughout the semester. The final task will be summative to provide a level of performance in addition to your competency.

SEMESTER 1: COMMUNICATIONS PACK

SEMESTER 2: PRODUCE AN INDUSTRY PORTFOLIO 

 

SEMESTER 1

Produce a multi-page presentation. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
(Photography Manual)
Use Adobe InDesign to create a professional and effective multi-page presentation.
Output for Print and Digital presentation.

Presentation should have a consistent, professional style. Utilise InDesign features such as Paragraph Styles and Master Pages to help with consistency.
Choose at least one key piece of reference material for design & layout inspiration.
See issuu.com or other sources.

Refer to Photography Manual brief for required content.
Submission
Produce a printed, bound A4 booklet for submission to Photography
Export a good quality, small file size PDF as instructed at digitalvm.wordpress.com/tag/pdf and upload to blackboard

 

Communication Pack. MAJOR PROJECT. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
In Stage One you created a personal visual identity and practised applying it to a range of stationary. In this project we look at refreshing this identity and applying it to a full range of communication collateral. Your visual identity or branding should remain consistent across your materials and create an overarching brand experience. Branding should be consistent and appropriately applied to the following materials:


~~Print~~
1. Business Card
Produce a printed Business Card with contact details.
2. Resume & Cover Letter
Produce a professionally formatted Resume and Cover Letter. Leave plenty of negative space for HR to write notes.
3. Mini Folio (lookbook, work samples)
Produce a printed mini folio / lookbook / sample card. This may take the form of a small booklet, flyer, postcard or swatch-book. This is a chance to be creative with format so make yourself a paper mockup and experiment. Be sure to include a minimum of 5 pieces of work and your contact info.
4. The Package (envelope, and packing experience)
Choose an envelope (or other mailable packaging) that suitably holds all your materials and reinforces your brand experience. Consider colour, format, material and printing.


~~Digital~~
1. Website
Using the Wix online web builder (or similar software) produce a professional website including:
samples of your work
an “about me” page (with photo)
a contact page. DO NOT post your phone number or email address.
Use a contact form for security purposes

Things to consider:
Site must be branded to match all other communication materials
Do not leave any generic content or links on your site.
Purchasing a custom domain name (ie yournamevm.com) can really add to the professionalism of your communication pack.
This can be redirected to point to your wix or other site. You DO NOT need to purchase the Pro version of wix to do this. Namecheap.com is a great option for domain purchase and setup as it allows you to create an a custom email address at no extra cost.
2. Social Media
Your website should link through to at least one active social media service. Your branding should likewise be applied here
3. Email Signature
Create a graphic email signature and set apply it to your gmail account

Submission
Print and package all printed materials as you would deliver to a potential mentor, employer or client.
Send an email with signature and attached digital folio as a PDF. The PDF should be no larger than 5MB.

Assessment
All pieces should be produced to a professional standard and ready to present to industry.
You will be assessed on the level of professional presentation and quality of your content and formatting.

SEMESTER 2

TASK 2: Produce an Industry Portfolio & Website. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Major Assessment

This semester you are required to create an industry portfolio.
To be competent in this course you are required to complete the following:
A physical portfolio
An online portfolio
Your folio should include:
20 unique pieces of work
Descriptive captions for images
Requirements:
All images should be of suitable resolution and corrected for good tone and colour and cropped and retouched to best present the content
Layout should be consistent with care taken to ensure spacing is even and graphic elements are appropriate and consistent
Order of work should be carefully considered and have a sense of continuity. Be sure to open and close the folio with particularly strong pieces of work.
Collaborative works must either state that they are collaborations or credit other creators involved.
Print Folio
Should be presented in a manner that is professional and appropriate for the industries you wish to approach.
Online Folio
Should include contact information and a brief “about me” section.
Submission
Your folio will be assessed during a formal 15 minute review session.
You will need to present:
a completed printed folio
a PDF of your folio
a link to your online folio

Quality of layout
Quality of presentation
