Course Description

This unit of competency covers using computer-aided design (CAD) applications to produce models and documentation for interior decoration and design projects to meet client and project brief requirements. It applies to the development of 2-D and 3-D drawings that incorporate all standard practice notations and drawing protocols.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

  • Home computer - It is advisable that you have a computer at home on which to do your
    self directed work (preferably a PC rather than Mac - as there is currently no Mac platform
    for this software).  You can however use "bootcamp" or "parrallels" to run the PC version
  • Software - "Revit Architecture 2018" and "AutoCAD 2018" software is available for access
    via RMIT for all students enrolled in the program. Authorisation for the software can also
    be sought via AutoDesk. Details will be given in class
  • Authorisation - You can then receive an authorisation for the use of the software for 36
    months at a time direct from AutoDesk (details will be supplied in first week)
  • Self paced online tutorial - If you find you are struggling with Revit, as an RMIT student
    you will have access to the Lynda.com website tutorials. This can only be done for free via
    the link below:

  • Building 28, level 3 -  24 hour, 7 day a week access is available in all enrolled RMIT
    students in this open access lab. Booking may be required (and will ensure you have
    a PC for you) - due to renovations, this may have relocated to another building
  • Building 94, level 5, room 13 will be available most nights after 6pm till midnight (refer to to
    timetable located on door of room). Note, an "access" form will need to be filled in and
    approved prior to use of this room.
  • During the course, video files will be uploaded into the relevant blackboard (or Canvas) folder for
    assistance

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course will be project based.


Assessment Tasks

Use CAD for design projects is a clustered unit. This will allow us to assess your project work
against several competencies.
This course is clustered with "Design for small-ed interiors (Studio prac 2)".

Project task:

Task 1:
The first task will involve the measureup of the façade of an existing building.  This will
include clearly labelled freehand sketches accompanied by photographs of the building
 

Task 2:
The tasks involves writing up and submitting a drawings/scales as well as a list of 
schedules that would be required to satisfy the final brief

Task 3, 4 & 4:
This is the submission of a drawing set of all drawing sheets created to date.  The intent
is for timely feedback. Submission will be at the start of class in weeks 7, 10 and 13

Task 6:
This is the final submission for this course and included a 3D revit model, which includes
a drawing set (both printed and digital), as well as an A3 fully rendered view (in color).

Attendance:
The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It
is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning
activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.

All assessment tasks are required to be completed to a satisfactory level. If you are unable to
complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension.
