Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather, organise, analyse and present workplace information using available systems. This includes identifying research requirements and sources of information, applying information to a set of facts, evaluating the quality of the information, and preparing and producing reports.
It applies to individuals who are required to apply their broad knowledge of the work environment to analysis and research tasks, evaluate information from a variety of sources and apply solutions to a range of unpredictable problems.

Details of Learning Activities
Students will learn through classroom and field experiments. They will have access to workplace information systems, equipment and resources, workplace policies and procedures, case studies and, where possible, real situations. Their evidence will be gathered as a consistent demonstration of performance of typical activities experienced in the knowledge management-research field of work.

Overview of Assessment
In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:
Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- identify or confirm research requirements and objectives
- gather, organise and present workplace information and data
- update, modify, maintain and store information
- maintain and handle data and documents systematically and securely
- prepare and produce reports including:
- recommendations based on the analysis of information
- clear and justified assumptions and conclusions
- use of efficient, valid and reliable methods
- use Boolean operators and other search tools
- analyse, evaluate and interpret data to support organisational activities.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must:
- explain organisational systems for recordkeeping/filing, including security procedures
- identify organisational policies and procedures and legal and ethical obligations relating to workplace information
- explain concepts related to research and analysis including reliability and validity
- give examples of techniques for data analysis and how they are applied
- explain research processes and strategies to identify new sources (online and print) of information and to use them most efficiently and effectively.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the knowledge management – research field of work and include access to:
- workplace information systems, equipment and resources
- workplace policies and procedures
- case studies and, where possible, real situations.
Feedback
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.
You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.

Overview
In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must attempt all steps of this assessment task to be deemed competent in this course.
Assessment Task 1: Workplace Research Project
Task 1 consists of three parts or steps. There is one task for this assessment. You will receive feedback and a grade for each step during the semester. Referencing the requirements of this marking guide, you will learn the research and analysis process.
Step 1 due in Week 5 To produce this one page document you will need to meet with your teacher in weeks 2-4 to determine your research topic. In week 5, you will produce a one page signed agreement which is a document that clearly defines your purpose, objectives and research criteria. You will explain your research method. This document will be dated and signed by both you and your teacher indicating your agreement on the research workplace oriented topic. Submit this to the drop box.
Step 2 due in Week 10 will be your research project. This report will be no more than 12 pages, (2,000 words) and follow the RMIT guidelines for Research Reports. You will reference using Endnote and the Harvard (author date system). Submit the report to the drop box. Your research project will have a:

Step 3 due in Weeks 15 and 16. You will present your Workplace Research Project using PowerPoint. Prepare handouts for the class. Observer feedback guide:
- Did the research project meet the purpose, objective and research criteria described in Step 1, Week 5?
- Did the student identify the problem(s)?
- Did the student demonstrate an understanding of the problem(s) and apply a suitable research method.
- Did the student provide suitable recommendations?
- Did the student present clearly, using voice and body language and equipment in an appropriate manner, keeping to a 10 minute presentation, and then allowing time for questioning?
You will receive feedback on this assessment task and as a result you will be informed whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading. After your in-class presentation, submit ppt materials to the drop box.

Submission Requirements
• Submit assessments on or before the due date.
• Keep a hard and soft copy of your assessment tasks.
• Put the Assessment Task into the Assessment Record and Cover Sheet. It is on the Learning Hub (Blackboard) blackboard. You must fill in the Assessment Record and Cover Sheet . It includes a declaration which declares that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work.
Submit ALL of the Assessment Record and Cover sheet to the correct assignment box on the Learning Hub (Blackboard).
Each page of your Assessment should include a footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers. For example, Julie Macpherson, 324567, Task 2, OHS2345C Ensure safe workplace, Page 1 of 10.
Late Submission Procedures
You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.
If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
