Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a text editor to design, create and save web pages to a given specification, rather than using an authoring tool.

It applies to individuals working as web designers and developers who interpret client briefs, generate a framework for internet information, and are resourceful in their application of technology in using a markup language.

Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.

The self-paced activities will be delivered thought various technology platforms and include your contribution to wikis and discussion threads, reflective journals, quizzes and interactive sessions.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated/real workplace environment.

We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

Tim Wright (2013), Learning JavaScript: A Hands-on Guide to the Fundamentals of Modern JavaScript, ISBN 978-0-321-83274-0

 

These books are ideal for beginning students. They cover in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with quite reasonable price.

 

Other materials will include worksheets distributed by the teacher in class and various Websites which will be indicated.


Overview of Assessment

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence

 Evidence of the ability to:    

  • design, create and save a document using a markup language, without using an automated code generation program
  • use a text editor for generating the markup language code for use on common web browsers
  • validate the markup document against the standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). 

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must:    

  • recognise and outline the use of markup languages including:
    • dynamic hypertext markup language (DHTML)
    • hypertext markup language (HTML)
    • standard generalised markup language (SGML)
    • virtual reality modelling language (VRML)
    • extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)
    • extensible markup language (XML)
  • identify and describe, standards applicable to a markup language
  • summarise the range of available web browsers and their accessibility
  • identify and describe, the issues of accessibility.  

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:

  • an organisational style guide or policy
  • all user requirements
  • a text editor
  • a range of browsers
  • the internet, to validate the markup.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Feedback

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.       


Assessment Tasks

Overview

 

You are required to complete two assessments.  You must successfully complete all sections of each assessment tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.

 

Assessment 1 - Individual Website Project

 

This assessment contains three parts. You are required to complete part 1 and 2 at the due date and continue working on the project and submit the final (part 3) at the nominate due date. For this assessment, you are required to develop a dynamic four-page Website using the latest standards in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.  Your Website will be uploaded to a Web hosting server and tested in different browsers.

 

Part 1 – HTML5 (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

Project website pages with all project/site contents, e.g. text, images. All pages must be validated.

 

Part 2 – CSS (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

A storyboard which feature the design of the website pages.

All project/website pages must be styled with CSS accordingly to the design. All CSS files must be validated.

 

Part 3 - Four Page Website (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

A four-page Website with a menu, text, images, table and forms styled with CSS. The Website must contain JavaScript functions as dynamic components of the website. It should be uploaded to a Web server.

 

 

Assessment 2 – Online In-class Quiz Test (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

 

For this assessment task, you are required to complete a set of online in-class open-book quiz test within the test time allowed. You must submit the test result as instructed by your teacher.

Submission Requirements

 

You should:

 

·  Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. 

·  Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)

·  When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work.  On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work.  An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.

·  Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.   For example, Julie Macpherson, 324567, Task 2, OHS2345C Ensure safe workplace, Page 1 of 10.

 

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):

If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission.  The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
