Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to develop communication protocols for a team or business unit.

This course applies to workers responsible for overseeing the communication of organisation-specific information to a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Details of Learning Activities

This course involves classes where information is shared through talks and group discussions, and workshops where exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time is spent during classes and workshops for students to work on group and individual assessment tasks.

Topic 1

Understanding organisational communication

·         Organisational communication channels

·         The needs for a strategy for formal communications with stakeholders 

·         The process of developing a strategy and different types of strategies to

          meet different needs

Topic 2

Developing communication strategies

·         Conducting PESTEL, competitor and SWOT analyses to determine internal

          and external information needs

·         Preparing and presenting a strategy that meets needs and is aligned with

          organisational goals

Topic 3

Developing communication plans

·         Defining purpose and developing SMART objectives

·         Preparing key messages for different strategies, including crisis management

·         Determining and allocating resources, including budget development

Topic 4

Establishing communication protocols

·         Adapting communication strategies to different contexts

·         Developing communication processes and protocols for strategies

·         Preparing and/or making available to staff information and resources to

          support protocols

Topic 5

Using social media

·         Determining the value of using social media for different communication

          purposes

·         Making sure usage is according to policy and procedures, and protecting

          client privacy and confidentiality

·         Creating social media accounts
