Learning Outcomes

Details of Learning Activities

Participate in individual and team problem solving scenarios/ case studies dealing with a range of practical exercises related to:

· Writing assembly language programs for fixed point processor that involves arithmetic, logic, data move and conditional branching instructions.

· Interrupt handling

· Interface microcontroller to external hardware devices

· Programming of Microcontroller peripherals using C and assembly programming

· Configuring linker files to link various code modules

Participate in individual small research projects in designated areas of underpinning knowledge including:

· Microcontroller Architecture

· Programming microcontrollers using C and assembly language

· Configuration of microcontroller subsystems

· Interfacing techniques

Participate in supervised workshop practice in simulated workplace environment, including:

· Design and construction and testing of a microcontroller based hardware system that uses various microcontroller peripherals/systems i.e. SPI, SCI, Timers, A/D and D/A etc. and involves signal processing. Specifications will be provided with work simulation (team or individual basis) or may be negotiated to suit a workplace-based application.

· Development of testing procedure to verify the performance specification, diagnosis of faults in the systems and rectify the fault. Specifications will be provided

Overview of Assessment

This is a progressive assessment, the underpinning knowledge will be assessed on the completion of each course, but the competency itself will not be signed off until related competency is completed and the student is deemed competent
The students are required to undertake summative assessments as follows:
• Written assessment
• Work Simulation Projects
• Written Assignments
• Schedule Practical Exercises

Assessment Tasks

1. A practical assignment on assembly language programming involving processing of floating point numbers, logic and conditional instructions

2. A project on design, construction and testing of a microprocessor based system that involves signal processing and hardware interfacing

3. A final examination

4. Project report (compulsory)

To pass this course, student must complete the project work to specifications, pass the written examination and submit a well- documented project report.
