Course Description

This unit of competency sets out the knowledge and skills required to produce basic 3D CAN and NC programs for CNC milling machine centre.

1.6 Creating, editing, copying, imaging, scaling, modifying,
1.7 Rotating and deleting 3D component geometry including:
entities/elements, lines, arcs/circles, ellipses, splines/polylines.
1.8 Constructing simple 3D wire frame, surface and /or solid model
geometry using: construction planes, construction axes, layers/levels,
viewing angles, machining axes/tool axes
1.9 Geometry/toolpaths for: contour, ruled, loft, revolution/spun,
swept/translated, coons/form patch
1.10 Identifying boundary elements and types of 3D machining surfaces

Details of Learning Activities

The learning activities in this class incorporate/comprise of:
Face to face classes where the student is required to take part in the class activities, discussions, tutorials, and lectures;
Homework using the supplied software;
Practical classes (Workshop practice);
Industrial visits;
Online research, and assignments.


Teaching Schedule


Please note: While your teacher will cover all the material in this schedule, the weekly teaching and assessment order is subject to change depending on class needs and availability of resources.

Session 01: Identifying Task requirements - Revision, occupational health and safety, setting up the CAM software on the home pc, class work format, test dates, exercise completion dates .

Session 02: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling
- Accessing the full range of menus, system variables and software defaults, customise to create/manipulate 2.5D and 3D geometric elements, construction planes, layers, viewing angles, Identify and following enterprise procedures.

Session 03: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling- construction planes, layers, viewing angles, toolpaths, surfaces. Set exercises.

Session 04: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling- - create and/or modify surfaces and solid component geometry using graphical drawing tools in CAM package; Create set-up sheets/job plans according to enterprise procedures; set exercises to be completed as required.

Session 05: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling- - create and/or modify 3D component geometry using graphical drawing tools in CAM package; Create 2.5D and 3D machine tool paths for a range of common operations for given machine tool; graphically prove tool movements on computer and edit as necessary; convert tool paths to NC program using the relevant post processor; must complete set exercises as required.

Session 06: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling- OH&S requirements for carrying out and completing the work on the NC/CNC machine in the workshop; using the machine manual efficiently; Create 2.5D an 3D component geometry using graphical drawing tools in CAM package; Create 2.5D an 3D milling toolpaths for a range of common operations for given machine tool; graphically prove tool movements on computer and edit as necessary; convert tool paths to NC program using the relevant post processor; setup the job and machine the component on NC machine; must complete set exercises as required.
Session 07: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling-- Create and/or modify 2.5D an 3D component geometry (surfaces and solids) using graphical drawing tools in CAM package; Create 2.5D and 3D milling toolpaths for a range of common operations for given machine tool; graphically prove tool movements on computer and edit as necessary; convert tool paths to NC program using the relevant post processor; produce component on CNC machine and make adjustments as necessary to achieve accuracy and size; must complete set exercises as required.
Session 08: Construct 3D components geometry for 3D milling- - Create and/or modify 2.5D and 3D component geometry (surfaces) using graphical drawing tools in CAM package; Create 2.5D an 3D milling toolpaths for a range of common operations for given machine tool; graphically prove tool movements on computer and edit as necessary; convert tool paths to NC program using the relevant post processor; produce component on CNC machine; must complete set exercises as required, how to manage and store cam files.

Late submission:
