National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

VBP278 Design Mechanical Machines

Element:

Design mechanical machine

Performance Criteria:

3.1 OH&S requirements for carrying out the work
are followed.

3.2 Resources and equipment for the task are
obtained in accordance with enterprise
procedures and checked for correct operation and
safety.

3.3 Principles of mechanical drive systems and
standard machine design are applied to the design
task.

3.4 Feasibility of proposed design is determined
based on calculations and relevant
diagrams/drawings.

3.5 Machine design is prepared using relevant
calculations.

3.6 Machine design is optimised within design
parameters, using relevant calculations.

3.7 Decisions for dealing with unexpected situations
are made from discussions with appropriate
personnel, job specifications and enterprise
procedures.

Element:

Document machine design.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 OH&S requirements for carrying out the work
are followed.

4.2 Design documentation and reports are prepared
with all relevant design information.

4.3 Final design specifications are established and
agreed on with appropriate personnel.

4.4 Alternative design solutions are provided, where
required.

4.5 Work completion notified according to enterprise
procedures.

Element:

Interpret design requirements for a rotating machine.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 OH&S and environmental requirements for a
given work area are obtained and understood and
impact on design are identified.

1.2 The machine design task is determined through
requests, work orders or equivalent and clarified
with the appropriate personnel.

1.3 Mechanical variables which will affect the
design are analysed.

1.4 Where appropriate, expert advice is sought with
respect to the design task and according to
enterprise procedures.

Element:

Select mechanical machine components

Performance Criteria:

2.1 OH&S requirements for carrying out the work
are followed.

2.2 Machine components are selected from
applicable reference documents to meet the
design specification, calculations and to satisfy
cost reliability and life requirements.

2.3 Component sizes and tolerances are calculated
using standard formulas and standard (tabulated)
component data.

2.4 Mechanical measurements and calculations are
performed and interpreted correctly.

Learning Outcomes

Interpret design requirements for a rotating machine.

Select mechanical machine components.

Details of Learning Activities

Lectures

Tutorials

Class Projects

The learning activities in this course are designed to equip students with knowledge and skills in applying the principles of Statics & Dynamics to enable the calculation of essential parameters used for design, and hence to Design selected items of machinery.

The course will be using a combination of lectures, reading tasks, tutorials/assignments and class projects to achieve these objectives.

Readings: Students may be required to read relevant section(s) of the recommended references/class notes prior to the next class.

Tutorial work & Practical Assignments challenge the students and ensure that participants apply and deepen the theoretical knowledge covered in lectures.
