Course Description

This unit covers the application of skills and knowledge in
taking responsibility for ones own competency development.
It encompasses understanding the structure of a competency
development plan, participating the development of a personal
competency development plan, understanding responsibilities
and obligation under competency development plan, following
activities for developing competency, self-monitoring
competency development and meeting trainee obligations for
periodic reporting of competency development activities.

1. Participate in the development of a personal competency

Performance Criteria:

1.1  The nature of competency-based training is sought from discussions with appropriate persons and understood.
1.2 The responsibilities/obligations of trainees/learners, their employers, trainers and assessors in a competency-based evelopment program are sought from discussions with appropriate persons and understood.
1.3 Competencies to be achieved in a personal competency development plan are established in discussions with appropriate ersons.
1.4 Details on how to achieve the individual competencies in the plan are sought from discussions with appropriate persons and understood.

2. Follow a personal competency development plan.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 All aspects of the competency development plan are put into practice and followed diligently.
2.2 Opportunities to practise skills and apply knowledge relative to a particular competency are pursued
2.3 Assistance is sought from appropriate persons to overcome difficulties in develop skills and apply knowledge relevant to a particular competency.
2.4 Progress in competency development is self monitored against the competency development plan.
2.5 Modifications to the personal competency development plan are made in consultation with appropriate persons.
2.6 Trainee/learners responsibility for periodic and timely reporting of competency development activities is followed.


Learning Outcomes



Details of Learning Activities

Learning and simulated work activities to demonstrate participation in development, and ability to follow a personal competency development plan.
This will include:

• Classroom group discussions to analyse a specified competency and underpinning knowledge
• Consultations with a teacher to identify gaps in one’s skills and knowledge in the specified area
• Self-initiated development of a draft competency development plan
• Peer review of the draft plan
• Maintaining training diary to document training activities and achievements
• Practical demonstrations of achieved competency


Teaching Schedule

This unit will be delivered in conjuction with a specialised unit of competency, for which a personal development plan will be developed.

1-2 Analysis of underpinning skills and knowledge; development of the draft plan; peer review Accumulative assessment
3 Development of the draft of competency development plan.
4 Group discussions. Plan presentation and submission (40%)
5 - 9 Following personal competency development plan.
10 Group discussions. Plan review and proposed adjustments (10%) 
11 -16 Following personal competency development plan Accumulative assessment
17 Revision; preparation for final assessment in the specified competency. Maintaining training diary ( 30%)
18 Final assessment if the specified competency. Training report/self-assessment (20%)
