Course Description

This unit covers the competency to interpret and use relevant standards and codes to prepare drawings required in the construction of pipeline reticulation networks, in accordance with the accepted practices outlined in AS1100.401

1. Sketch the composition of a pipeline reticulation system

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Given relevant data, a diagrammatic sketch of a typical reticulation network is prepared.

Element:

2. Interpret and plot survey data from field and level books to prepare site and contour plans, where appropriate, of the area serviced by the pipelines.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Survey data from field and level books is correctly interpreted and the appropriate information extracted in preparation for plotting site and contour plans.
2.2 Site and contour plans of the area serviced by the pipelines are correctly plotted to industry standards.

3. Show the layout of pipelines in a plan.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 The horizontal alignment of a pipeline network is fully detailed and correctly displays the information required (including water supply, sewerage and stormwater drainage).

4. Prepare longitudinal sections of pipelines where appropriate.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Drawings are prepared of the longitudinal sections of a pipeline which are correctly plotted and fully detailed.

Details of Learning Activities

Teacher-led face to face lectures of the concepts of reticulation system design and drawing layouts for water supply and stormwater drainage networks

In a computer lab using Computer Aided Drafting software and using appropriate standard symbols and terminology to AS 1100 prepare drawings of a water supply and stormwater drainage system based on industry standards including:
Draw a reticulation system plan with contours for a small water supply from survey data and other supplied information.
Draw water supply pipes and fittings to comply with Water Reticulation Code Standard Drawings.
Calculate distance and change in level and grade from pump supply to storage tank.
Draw a water supply tank and use standard symbols for fittings and details.
Draw a reticulation system plan for a small drainage project from survey data and other supplied information.
Use standard symbols for pits and pipelines and store them in a CAD library.
Draw drainage pits, pit schedule, fittings and details and store them in a CAD library.
Draw a longitudinal section from the reticulation plan and use exaggerated scales.
Add pipe grade, class, type, % fall and level information to the longitudinal section.
