Course Description

This unit covers the competency to carry out analysis and design of flexural reinforced concrete members, including beams and one-way slabs.

1. Carry out analysis and design of singly reinforced concrete beams.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Design loads are calculated for each imposed action/live load configuration.
1.2 Design shear forces are calculated for each imposed action/live load configuration.
1.3 Design moments are calculated for the critical imposed action/live load configuration.
1.4 Design moment capacity is calculated to satisfy the moment envelope.
1.5 Calculations are completed to design a flexural member for strength conditions and to satisfy durability.

2. Carry out analysis and design of doubly reinforced concrete beams.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Calculations are carried out to analyse and design doubly reinforced beams.

3. Carry out analysis and design of reinforced concrete T-beams and L-beams.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Effective flange width is determined for T-beam or L-beam sections.
3.2 Calculations are carried out to analyse and design T-beam or L-beam sections.

4. Carry out analysis and design of continuous beams and continuous one-way slabs.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Design bending moments are determined for a two-span or three-span continuous beam using appropriate coefficients.
4.2 Design shear forces are determined.
4.3 Reinforcement is determined to satisfy negative and positive design moments.

5.1 Reinforcement is chosen to satisfy development length requirements.

Theory and industry-based worked examples on the:
• Analysis and design of singly reinforced concrete beams for a Reinforced Concrete Office Building using industry drawings
• Analysis and design of doubly reinforced concrete beams for a Reinforced Concrete Office Building using industry drawings
• Analysis and design of reinforced concrete T-beams and L-beams for a Reinforced Concrete Office Building using industry drawings
• Analysis and design of continuous beams and continuous one-way for a Reinforced Concrete Office Building using industry drawings slabs
• Termination and layout of reinforcement to satisfy Code requirements
• Design of shear reinforcement for a Reinforced Concrete Office Building using industry drawings

Research activities
• Using the Internet research AS 3600 and identify the clauses required for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete beams and slab
Assignments
Assignment tasks involve applications of standards, codes and requirements applicable to analysis and design of flexural concrete members according to Australian standards as close as practicable to real work situations and include real work decisions by the learner

Industry Visits
Students will be involved in industry visits and or engineering industry exhibitions.
Industrial Placement:
Students in the final stage of Advanced Diploma are encouraged to undertake an industrial practice work placement activity, which requires student to undertake tasks within structural design systems domain within industry.
Task may involve activities linked to auto cad, software packages, project management, evaluation, analysis, design, detailing etc.

Engineering employment requires the capacity to work effectively in teams, to communicate effectively in both oral and writing and to learn effectively. In order to prepare students for employment as graduates they will be provided a quality assured teaching and learning environment which is conductive to the development of adult learning. Assessment Tasks

The assessment is conducted in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course according to the performance criteria set in the National Training Package.
Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards.
Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor.
Feedback will be provided throughout the course. To successfully complete this course you will be required to demonstrate competency in each assessment task detailed under Assessment tasks section of Course Guide Part B.
This unit will be assessed in the classroom environment using holistic assessment, based on typical workplace activities.


Project (50%)
Project report preparation for assessment will be done covering elements 1, 2,3,4,5,and 6.

Final exam(50%)
Written assessment will be done covering elements 1, 2,3,4,5,and 6.

  • Student directed hours involve completing activities such as reading online resources, project work, individual student-teacher course related consultation.  Students are required to self study the learning materials and complete the assigned out of class activities for the scheduled non-teaching hours.  The estimated time is 12 hoursoutside the class time.

Late submission:

Students requiring extensions for 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application
