Course Description
This elective unit deals with the knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide dental hygiene supportive services to patients who have special needs, in collaboration with special needs carers as indicated.
The purpose of this unit is to build on to the competencies already developed in the core units and apply these with a flexible, supportive, empathetic, insightful and adaptable approach that will foster the provision of complementary oral health care in a challenging oral health environment.
Oral health care support is provided under direction and according to the particular guidelines, policies and procedures of a health service or setting. Optimum oral health care is delivered with respect to the goals, values, beliefs and preferences of the patient.
Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
This unit should be assessed after achievement of the following related competency units:
· TAFEDH015 – Manage patients with simple to complex dental hygiene treatment needs
· TAFEDH025 - Provide dental hygiene care for individuals with special needs
