Course Description

This unit deals with the high degree of knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide evidence based dental hygiene therapeutic, preventive and supportive services, and educational intervention to patients with moderate to complex periodontal conditions and disorders, within the context of dental hygiene practice and conducted according to occupational health, safety and welfare policy and procedures and infection control policy and procedures.

2.3 Follow all necessary safety precautions during the preparation and presentation of the surgery

3.1 Take a comprehensive and systematic medical, dental and social history to collect, collate and record data by: interview questionnaire observation, measurement examination radiographic procedures

3.2 Collect relevant clinical data to perform a periodontal health and risk assessment

3.3 Discuss the process and rationale of data collection and recording with the patient

3.4 Preserve and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times

4. Formulate and validate a dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment plan

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Collect, record and analyse data findings and discuss with the patient and the supervising dental practitioner responsible for overall patient care

4.2 Formulate a dental hygiene diagnosis in communication with the supervising dental practitioner

4.3 Develop a dental hygiene treatment plan using evidence based criteria, to incorporate treatment, preventive and supportive dental hygiene interventions, that are prioritised to cater for the patient‟s periodontal and oral health needs and takes into consideration the patients own goals, values and preferences

4.4 Integrate the dental hygiene treatment plan within the overall dental treatment plan identifying the need for specialist dental referral if required

4.5 Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the treatment plan is discussed comprehensively with the patient, who is provided with the opportunity to clarify issues and is informed of possible treatment outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent and acceptance of the hygiene treatment plan is confirmed with the patient

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Educate and inform the patient considering their needs, goals and treatment expectations based on evidence based criteria

5.2 Deliver educational interventions at a pace that will encourage patient understanding and ownership of their periodontal and oral health status in relation to their overall health and well-being

5.3 Provide regular opportunities for the patient to actively participate and ask questions to evaluate comprehension and promote compliance

5.4 Instruct the use of specific oral hygiene aids, and any safety precautions associated with the use of these

5.5 Evaluate and review oral health techniques and patient understanding/compliance regularly utilising a variety of evaluation methodologies as an avenue to provide specific maintenance

5.6 Design educational methodologies to encourage a sense of self responsibility for oral health based on an understanding of (their) periodontal and oral health status and personal goals

5.7 Adjust methodologies and strategies based on evaluative investigation and feedback, to meet the individual patient‟s needs and preferences

6. Implement therapeutic, preventive and supportive interventions for the management of moderate to complex periodontal conditions and disorders within the context of dental hygiene practice

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Discuss proposed therapeutic interventions and outcomes comprehensively with the patient abiding to the principles of informed consent, whilst providing an opportunity to clarify issues, and inform of possible outcomes resulting from any planned treatment

6.2 Provide selected and prioritized therapeutic interventions according to the dental hygiene treatment plan, patient expectations and dentist/dental specialist instructions, to manage, control and/or eliminate identified risk factors

6.3 Determine the need for pain control based on examination findings, observation and recognition of non-verbal feedback mechanisms and discussions with the patient, and proceed with any necessary pain control requirements  

6.4 Implement preventive strategies based on the patient‟s examination findings and risk assessment analysis to address poor oral health determinants

6.5 Communicate and collaborate with the supervising dentist and if required, dental specialist, to consolidate and unify patient management

6.6 Monitor and evaluate treatment outcomes of moderate to complex periodontal patient presentations and devise an evidence based maintenance program in collaboration with dentist/dental specialist for continuing oral and general health

7.4 Identify social factors influencing tobacco addiction of marginalised communities and minority cultural groups

7.5 Analyse the spiritual and psychological crisis of Aboriginal Australia as an example of how people in distress are predisposed to substance addiction

8. Provide empathetic brief motivational interviewing technique to counsel patients towards behavioral change for cessation of smoking

8.1 Investigate patient history and examination findings to support the individual needs of the patient

8.2 Communicate strategies to address tobacco use, prevention and cessation through brief motivational interviewing

8.3 Provide patient information on pharmaceutical aides that assist in tobacco cessation through recommended nicotine replacement therapies

8.4 Identify and engage the relevant community support services for patient referral

Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

These units which form Periodontology 2, focuses on the skills required to:

  • Manage patients with moderate to complex dental hygiene treatment needs
  • Practice in a Special Needs Environment

 Periodontology 2 is conducted in the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne (RDHM).

 

The assessment is composed of:

  1. Clinical practice with completion of logbook
  2. Case Study Oral Presentation: Marked utilising an assessment check sheet. A rubric will be available on blackboard 3 weeks prior to the presentation
  3. Literature Review: students may submit their review in an essay format. The assessment will be marked against a Rubic with either a Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory
  4. Written theory examination 60%

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected. APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK - A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date. They must lodge the application form (available www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least 24 hours before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on level 3 of Dental Hospital. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION. For missed assessments such as exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or within 48 hours of the scheduled time of examination http://rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration.  Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator. Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in all tasks to achieve Competence for this course
