Course Description
This unit addresses the principles of pediatric dentistry, developing existing skills to enable the dental hygienist to provide patient centred, evidence-based dental hygiene care to children and adolescent clients.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will have developed an understanding of the principles of pediatric dentistry, developing existing skills to enable the dental hygienist to provide patient centred, evidence-based dental hygiene care to children and adolescent clients.
Details of Learning Activities
A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:
- Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
- Written classroom tasks
- Demonstration and classroom discussion
- Group discussions
- Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
- Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets
- Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard)
- Self managed research to support completion of assessment tasks.
Teaching Schedule
This unit is scheduled for delivery as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne) or in the undergraduate clinic Level 2 Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. There will be opportunity for you to attend clinics off site.

Overview of Assessment
Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.
The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:
- candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply essential knowledge identified for this competency unit before undertaking independent workplace application
- this competency unit should be assessed in conjunction with relevant competency unit(s) in delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene)
- evidence must demonstrate the individual’s ability to apply their knowledge within the requirements of dental hygiene practice
- consistency of performance should be demonstrated over the required range of workplace situations relevant to an identified work role

Assessment Tasks
Assessment 1: Assignment (Reflective Journal)
The reflective journal is based from clincial experience and clinical observation from a paediatric context covering clinical manifestations , oral health needs and their management, patient and parent interaction with self and clinician, including being culturally appropriate.
Assessment 2: Oral Presentation of Casestudy
The oral presentation is of an issued case study (group project) covering all aspects of general , oral growth and development for each stage of childhood, cognitive and psychological development
Assessment 3: Clinical Assessment
The clinical assessment is a practical assessment.
