·         TAFEDH015 – Manage patients with simple to complex dental hygiene treatment needs

·         TAFEDH025 - Provide dental hygiene care for individuals with special needs

Course Description

This elective unit deals with the knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide dental hygiene supportive services to patients who have special needs, in collaboration with special needs carers as indicated.

 

The purpose of this unit is to build on to the  competencies already developed in the core units and apply these with a flexible, supportive, empathetic, insightful and adaptable approach that will foster the provision of complementary oral health care in a challenging oral health environment.

 

Oral health care support is provided under direction and according to the particular guidelines, policies and procedures of a health service or setting. Optimum oral health care is delivered with respect to the goals, values, beliefs and preferences of the patient.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Courtesy and empathy is demonstrated in all communication with patients/clients and staff in the service/organisation

1.2 Initial contact is made with patient/client and/or carer, regarding care and appropriate time for care according to the care plan and/or established procedures

4. Provide dental hygiene supportive services

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Medical, social and dental histories are reviewed to eliminate possible contraindications to proposed dental hygiene treatment. Health status is confirmed to recognise potential of either a medical or dental emergency so that appropriate management of the patient is undertaken to prevent an emergency from occurring

4.2 After reviewing the patient‟s case notes the surgery or health setting is prepared to cater for any predetermined special needs of the patient 

4.3 Oral conditions are identified, recorded, analysed, evaluated and observed to design the provision of supportive dental hygiene therapy that is evidence based to assist in the control of oral disease

4.4 Non-invasive intervention oral health strategies are developed planned and implemented to address the needs, goals, beliefs and preferences of the patient in order to provide optimum oral health care

4.5 Oral hygiene home care strategies are developed, planned and implemented to address the needs, goals, beliefs and preferences of the patient in order to provide optimum oral health care 

4.6 Information regarding all procedures and home care strategies are imparted to the patient and/or carer, in a supportive, encouraging and client focussed manner to promote long term oral health care

4.7 An explanation of the selected treatment requirements and associated procedures is given to the patient. Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the patient/client and/or carer is informed of possible negative outcomes resulting from any treatment options. Consent is confirmed with the patient/client and/or carer

4.8 The devised oral health care plan is confirmed with the overseeing special needs dental practitioner

4.9 Supportive oral health services are paced, delivered and adapted according to the nature of the oral conditions that have been presented, the health status and preferences of the patient

4.10 Bursts of oral disease activity are readily identified, recorded, evaluated and addressed accordingly. Referral back to the supervising special needs dental practitioner is organised as indicated

4.11 Maintenance requirements are identified and implemented, to provide an avenue for monitoring treatment outcomes, review and assessment of ongoing supportive, complimentary and/or palliative oral health care 

4.12 All supportive oral health service requirements are carried out according to occupational health, safety and welfare guidelines, infection control policy and procedures and legislative requirements

5. Recognise and pass on significant information about patients/clients

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Confidentiality and privacy of the patient/client is given priority where reports are to be provided to appropriate personnel 

5.2 Information is obtained from relevant sources as required 

5.3 Significant information is passed on to appropriate care team member as required

2.1 Necessary equipment is assembled as and when required according to established procedures

2.4 Final check of patient/client comfort and safety is undertaken

dental hygiene therapeutic, preventive and supportive services, and educational intervention to patients with moderate to complex periodontal conditions and

disorders, within the context of dental hygiene practice and conducted according to occupational health, safety and welfare policy and procedures and

infection control policy and procedures.

Assessment Tasks

 

These units which form Periodontology 2, focuses on the skills required to:

Manage patients with moderate to complex dental hygiene treatment needsPractice in a Special Needs Environment

Periodontology 2 is conducted in the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne (RDHM).

The assessment is composed of:

Clinical practice with completion of logbookCase Study Oral Presentation: Marked utilising an assessment check sheet. A rubric will be available on blackboard 3 weeks prior to the presentationLiterature Review: students may submit their review in an essay format. The assessment will be marked against a Rubic with either a Satisfactory or Not SatisfactoryWritten theory examination 60%

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected. APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR

SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK - A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date. They must lodge the application

form (available www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least 24 hours before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin

Office on level 3 of Dental Hospital. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION. For missed assessments such as

exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or

within 48 hours of the scheduled time of examination http://rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration. Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the

assignment if this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator. Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in all tasks to achieve Competence for this course
