Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to identify, select and prepare appropriate instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments for specific removable dental prosthetic procedures. This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There are no pre-requisites for this unit however it is assumed that you have successfully completed the Diploma of Dental Technology

You will be observed and assessed through your planned activities throughout the duration of the course.

On completion of this course, you should be able to:

1.1 Make accessible in the clean zone of the surgery the patient’s required laboratory work, necessary charts and records

1.2 Give personal protective equipment to the patient and members of the dental team

1.3 Ensure emergency procedures are in place and ready for use according to organisation policy and procedures

2.1 Implement infection prevention and control techniques

2.2 Select the correct equipment, instruments and materials for the planned prosthetic procedure

2.3 Arrange instruments in order of use for a range of prosthetic procedures

3.1 Prepare instruments and equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions

3.2 Maintain and store instruments and equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions and in accordance with infection control guidelines

4.1 Prepare the correct materials and medicaments using the correct techniques, to the correct consistency and quantity required, and within the designated timelines

4.2 Monitor storage requirements and shelf life of materials and medicaments

4.3 Check materials for integrity prior to use

4.4 Monitor expiry dates of materials and medicaments and re-order materials correctly

4.5 Store materials and medicaments according to manufacturers’ instructions

4.6 Confine materials to clean zone of surgery to minimise contamination by aerosols and splatter

4.7 Follow workplace health and safety policies and procedures when preparing materials


Overview of Assessment

 

You must successfully demonstrate each of the following assessment tasks covering both skills and knowledge in order to be deemed competent.

Assessment 1 - prepared the clinic for at least 4 different dental prosthetic procedures including: - locating each patient’s required laboratory work and necessary charts and records - selecting and preparing instruments and equipment as required for specific procedures - preparing relevant materials and medicaments for treatment - maintaining and storing equipment correctly and in good working order

Assessment 2 - consistently applied standard and additional precautions during preparation for 4 different prosthetic procedures including: - using personal protective equipment - using clean and sterile techniques where appropriate - maintaining and storing equipment correctly and in good working order.
