Approach to learning and assessment

During the program you will experience a variety teaching and learning approaches in the courses you undertake. The approach reflects the unique aim of each course; specifically the knowledge capabilities and generic capabilities. As a student you will be exposed to the following teaching and learning approaches:

  • Case-based learning engages you in critical thinking and decision making about realistic problems in a business discipline
  • Problem-based learning engages you in problem analysis, research and provision of  solutions
  • Cooperative learning enables you to work in collaborative or team-based tasks
  • Reflective learning allows you to reflect on your learning experiences

Assessment is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, as the assessment you receive must be appropriate to the objectives of each course. The assessment you receive is critical to the success of your degree program, and to your future success in the workplace.  Assessment in this program may include:

  • Examinations: an individual form of assessment where you have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to explain fundamental principles and solve problems;
  • Assignments and projects: these may be done individually or in groups.  This method may also enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team;
  • Reflective journals: where you pause to consider what you have learnt, along with reflecting on the self-development associated with that learning;
  • Assessed tutorials or presentations: a form of in-class test, which may be done individually or as a team:
  • Self-assessment and peer-assessment: for assessment activities such as seminars you will assess yourself or your own group; or assess the work of other groups.  This is part of equipping you to become more independent in your own learning and assessing your own and others’ performance.

Most of the assessment will enable your teacher to provide you with feedback on your strong and weak points.  This will enable you to improve your performance in the future.

As a student in the Associate Degree in Business you will be required to undertake concurrent English to develop your language proficiency in the disciplines and applications of business and commerce. You will also receive assistance in developing your learning skills so that eventually your transition to degree studies is smooth and successful. For this reason your courses will be delivered by a multi skilled team of learning skills experts, discipline teachers and language experts who will work together to deliver the program in a way which embeds the development of the relevant skills and knowledge seamlessly across the curriculum.  The second year English and Learning skills will be built on a first year which will lead you to be a self directed learner.

The elective course in the third semester can be taken from any RMIT HE program. As such the teaching and learning will reflect HE delivery approaches. Students in the Associate Degree in Business will be mentored in this transition to better facilitate articulation.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he
