Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The Associate Degree in Legal Practice (Paralegal) is an innovative program that focuses on developing high-level legal skills for you as a paralegal in the legal industry. In this program you will develop practical legal skills in addition to being able to identify and analyse legal concepts and principles. You will develop skills in case analysis, legal research, file management, preparing court documents, legal writing and drafting, interview and negotiation skills, together with an awareness of legal, professional and social responsibilities.
Throughout the program, you will be exposed to a variety of learning experiences which include lectures and tutorials, role plays, court visits and industry presentations. Embedded in the program are the skills and knowledge to enable you to practice and expand your learning experience through Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
In the final year of the program the capstone course, LAW2494 Professional Skills and Responsibility will provide you the opportunity to reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt through the management of client files in a simulated legal office. In addition, there is the opportunity to undertake an Internship as your elective course in your final semester.
The Associate Degree in Legal Practice (Paralegal) provides opportunities for entry into a wide range of legal careers in legal practices, banks, insurance companies or other public and private organisations with in-house legal departments. For those of you already employed in the legal industry, it will offer you the opportunity to further develop your existing skills and knowledge.

Program entry requirements
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.
For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalents web page.
Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in any other English; and a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any).
Applicants with Work and Life Experience
This course uses the entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.
You should sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple Choice if:
- You have no prior Year 12, VET qualifications, HE results or relevant work experience that meet the minimum entry requirements for the program; and
- You are 19 years of age or over (as of 1 Jan 2019) and have not enrolled in secondary studies for at least two years
The STAT Multiple Choice will satisfy Year 12 English and Year 11 Mathematics prerequisites. Applicants must meet all other prerequisites or equivalents. Learn more about RMIT STAT results.

The RMIT Associate Degree in Legal Practice (Paralegal) is a general business award and does not have external accreditation from any professional association or accrediting body. The school has a Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) which is the main link to industry. Membership includes senior executives from a number of major national law firms and legal associations. The committee provides feedback on the currency of the program, the changing needs of industry and has input into the design of new courses.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
