Approach to learning and assessment

Your learning experiences in this program will include a broad mix of study modes, including lectures, tutorials, practical exercises, weekly classes, online and off-line learning and hands on practice in relevant aircraft.

The program is primarily conducted at the Hartwig Air’s facility in Parafield South in South Australia. The theoretical courses; AERO2602 Introduction to Aircraft, MATH2389 Mathematics, AERO2601 Human Factors in Aviation are delivered in a blended delivery mode of online and face-to-face at Hartwig Air where as AERO2471 Aviation Industry Environment , AERO2472 Aviation Quality Systems, AERO2630 Airport and Airline Operations and AERO2577 Air Transport Pilot Licence 1 & 2 will be offered in blended delivery mode at Point Cook/Melbourne campuses only.

Assessment in this program is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities and you will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, depending on the course objectives and learning outcomes.

Your assessment in the program may include all or some of the following:

  • examinations: an individual form of assessment where you are asked to demonstrate problem solving and your ability to explain underpinning theories required of flying and the aviation industry;
  • assignments and projects: some will require you to demonstrate an ability to work alone, while some will involve group work requiring you to be part of a team with other students;
  • practical flying: where your practical skills will be assessed against specific criteria based on CASA recommended standards
  • assessed tutorials or presentations: a form of in-class test, which you will be required to complete either individually or as a member of a team;
  • self-assessment and peer assessment: for assessment activities such as seminars you may be asked to assess your own work, the work of your group, or the work of other groups. This is part of equipping you to become more independent in your own learning and to develop your assessment skills.

The assessment you complete, with the exception of exams, will enable the teaching staff to provide you with feedback on your strong and weak points. This will enable you to improve performance in the future.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You may contact the program manager or the Equitable Learning Services unit if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and in addition
  • these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be in a simulated workplace environment.

Specifically in this program, you will undertake courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL), these are your individual AERO flying courses such :

  • AERO2592 Flying to Private Pilot Licence
  • AERO2596  Commercial Pilot Licence Flying
  • AERO2594 Flying to Instrument Rating
  • AERO2638 Flying to Instructor Rating

You will be assessed on professional and vocational work in the flying training environment, including in the actual aircraft (during flight and on the ground) and in flight simulators, during which you will receive feedback from the CASA approved test testing officer of the flying competence of the student to RPL,PPL and CPL standard as specified by CASA in accordance with the CASA Manual of Standards.

Program transition plan

Very Important: This plan is being phased out.

AD023HA  Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots) will be discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 1, 2023. The program will be taught out to current students until Semester 2 2024. If you are unable to complete your program by the end of December 2024, you may, as an alternative, apply to enter another RMIT program, or one of the following similar program plans offered at RMIT University:

  • AD023A Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots)
  • AD023BN Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots)

Please note the above plans are offered in Point Cook and Bendigo respectively.

For more information and advice on your enrolment, please contact your Program Manager, Mr. Varinder Sohi (varinder.sohi@rmit.edu.au).

Transition Plan 2023

Minor amendments have been made to Year One and Year Two of the program as listed below. If you have already completed courses from the list of removed courses below, your credit from these courses will be counted towards your completion.

  1. The following core courses have been removed:
    • MATH2389 Mathematics (Year 1)
    • AERO2472 Aviation Quality Systems Year 2)

  2. The following core courses have been added:
    • COSC2960 Foundations of Artificial Intelligence for STEM (Year 1)
    • ONPS2702 STEM for Sustainable Development (Year 2)

If you have commenced Year One and have not yet completed MATH2389 Mathematics you should complete COSC2960 Foundations of Artificial Intelligence for STEM instead.

If you are commencing Year Two in 2023 and completed MATH2389 Mathematics you do not need to complete COSC2960 Foundations of Artificial Intelligence for STEM.

Transition Plan 2021

Effective from Semester 1 2021 there will be changes to the program structure :

AERO2637 Instructor Theory & AERO2638 Flying to Instructor Rating  have been added as program option courses in Semester 4, Year 2.

Transition Plan 2019

Minor amendments have been made to the AD023HA program plan structure for students studying the Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots) via Hartwig Air in South Australia, to match the AD023A program plan as delivered at Point Cook and the Melbourne (City) campus in Victoria. The revised AD023HA program structure sees a re-sequencing of course offerings that allows for one CASA licence level per Semester:

Recreational Pilot Licence(RPL) to be offered in Semester 1
Private Pilot Licence(PPL) to be offered in Semester 2
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) to be offered in Semester 3

The AD023HA Semester 1, 2 and 3 academic courses are now delivered online, which means that students studying via Hartwig in South Australia no longer need to attend RMIT’s City campus in Victoria, and some Semester 4 option courses have been deleted from the program structure in accordance with the University’s Service Agreement with Hartwig Air.  These course changes will not impact any student who commenced in Semester 1 2018 or since, noting that:

Students who commenced in Semester 1 2018 will be able to enrol into the CPL Semester with minimal change.
Students who commenced in Semester 2 2018 have already enrolled in line with the amended AD023HA program plan.
The amended AD023HA program plan will be implemented from Semester 1 2019 in blended delivery mode (a blend of face-to-face delivery in Adelaide and online delivery).

Semester dates will be in line with those that apply to other RMIT associate degree programs.

All of this information has been communicated fully to all active AD023HA students.
