Purpose of the Program

Research experience as provided by an Honours program is required for most academic and research positions, and increasingly for positions in other sectors of industry. Experience and training in research is also valuable in maintaining the currency of your knowledge in science.

Specific objectives of the one year Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) (Honours) program are to:

  • develop your skills in critical thinking, self-directed learning and communication,
  • equip you with the skills, knowledge and capabilities to work effectively in a range of research settings,
  • support you in participating in existing and future RMIT research projects.

ONPS2450 Science Honours Project 1, ONPS2452 Science Honours Project 2, ONPS2454 Science Honours Project 3, ONPS2456 Science Honours Project 4 will serve as a capstone experience - a culmination of prior knowledge, skills and their application acquired during the program of study.

This program requires on campus attendance and may include various on-line components.

Articulation and pathways

Upon successful completion of this program, you may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

This program follows on from, and builds on, undergraduate science degrees. Graduates who successfully complete the program with a suitable grade will be eligible to enter a Masters or PhD program by research at RMIT or other university.

Entrance requirements

Program Entrance Requirements:

An Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in computer science, information technology or software engineering with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 overall. GPA is calculated as per the RMIT standard.

International qualifications are assessed for comparability to Australian qualifications according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

English Language Requirements:

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

RMIT University offers Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning to recognise the skills you may have gained through formal and informal education and training, work experience and/or life experience including volunteer work, committee responsibilities, family duties and hobbies.

Through its research programs, the School of Science has established many links with a diverse range of industries and has a strong research record in applied sciences. Links with industry play an important role in the Honours program and many of the research projects undertaken are initiated by, and often involve, relevant industries.

This program has an Industry Advisory Committee which includes external members drawn from diverse external industries and institutions. They provide further opportunities for networking and are a useful link in ensuring that the teaching material and student capabilities remain close to the needs of future external employers.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services 

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course-related materials such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world. 

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit), or Library e-resources. 

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. 

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

IT and Wireless 

If you have a laptop or other wireless-enabled device you can connect to RMIT’s fast Wi-Fi. While on campus, no matter how you work or where you work, you’re able to connect, collaborate and create using this secure network. 

In addition, with myDesktop, you can access your RMIT desktop and applications from home or wherever you have an internet connection.
