Top of pagePurpose of the Program
In the Honours program you will be introduced to a research-based mode of study combined with a studio model that facilitates the production of your work. Intensive studio and workshop practice will develop your expressive capacity, aesthetic sensibility and technical proficiency at a level consistent with that of a professional arts practitioner.
Building a coherent body of advanced knowledge about contemporary art practices, you will also develop your studio-based research in relation to a wider theoretical and critical context.
The capstone experience of the program, Honours Independent Project, will be the focus of your art-making. This is paired with Practice, Reflection and Discourse to support your cognitive and technical skills for developing new understanding and communicating this to a range of audiences.
The program will engender you with greater self-reliance in undertaking and initiating independent research as an integral part of your professional and artistic development. This will prepare you for independent professional practice and the appropriate knowledge and skills required for further studies at post-graduate level.
Alongside the potential for higher degree research, you will have skills in creative thinking and problem solving that are valued by employers in a range of sectors and key to your career as an artist.

An honours degree is the most common pathway if you wish to undertake postgraduate research. Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, or other universities, including the Master of Fine Art (coursework), Master of Photogrpahy (coursework), Master of Arts (Art in Public Space), Master of Fine Arts (Research) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
If you have already developed areas of knowledge and skill included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for credit.
Top of pageEntrance requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant discipline with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (out of 4.0).
International English language requirement
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page
Selection task
All applicants must complete and submit the selection task which includes a folio component.

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit Bachelor of Arts, (Fine Art) (Honours). All staff teaching in the program are artists and theorists with strong links to the arts industry both nationally and internationally. The curriculum of the program is consistently informed by consultations with a Program Advisory Committee whose membership is drawn from major galleries and independent artists.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.
Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.
Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
