Approach to learning and assessment

In order to graduate from the honours program you must complete all courses within the program structure. The program has a mixture of face-to-face and flexible delivery modes including interactive workshops, seminars, self-directed study and individual practice-based learning to all phases of your research project.

You will receive direct feedback on each assessment task, initially in the preparatory stage from your supervisor and, following each formal assessment, from the examiners as written comments.

Components of the program

  • Research: research is a major component of this program of study. You will conduct your own research under the guidance of your supervisor. Your responsibilities will include project management, data collection, analysis and written and oral reporting.
  • Literature Review: a structured review of recent advances in the literature relevant to your research topic.
  • Oral Presentations: presentation of two seminars relating to your research project.
  • Workshops and Seminars: there will be some lectures, demonstrations and seminars dealing with topics relevant to professional competence in the practice of research and current biomedical or health research.
  • Assessment: assessment of the program will be undertaken by a panel of examiners drawn from academic and research staff of the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences and, where appropriate, from researchers external to the school who have suitable expertise.

The research project will be assessed by:

  • written presentation and literature analysis
  • oral presentation
  • analysis and research methods
  • thesis

The methods of determining award levels and levels of honours in the Program design procedure will apply to students who commence their enrolment in the relevant program from 1 January 2016.

If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage, it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Equitable Learning Service https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services if you would like to find out more.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he.

Work integrated learning

This program is designed to provide you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations.

These interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

In this honours program you will undertake a project supervised by an active researcher in the discipline area. This experience is designed to simulate employment as a research assistant conducting a research project within a research-active University. Specific courses are: ONPS2562 Research Project 1 (24 cp) ; ONPS2421 Research Project 2 (24 cp);and ONPS2422 Research Project 3 (24 cp).
