Approach to learning and assessment

Learning experiences in this program will contain a broad mix of study modes including seminars, individual and group consultations, presentations, workshops and lectures using face-to-face, online and other flexible delivery mechanisms.

Assessment is designed to provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, depending on the course objectives and learning outcomes.

Assessment in this program will include all or some of the following:

  • Assignments and projects: some will require you to demonstrate an ability to work alone, while some may involve group work requiring you to be part of team with other students. Written assessment tasks will enable you to develop your writing skills and enhance your ability to analyse, synthesise and present complex ideas and information.
  • Reflective journals: where you pause to consider what you have learnt and reflect on the further development of the related capability.
  • Assessed tutorials or presentations: a form of in-class test, which you will be required to complete either individually or as a team.
  • Self-assessment and peer-assessment: for assessment activities such as seminars you may be asked to assess your own work, the work of your group, or the work of other groups. This is part of equipping you to become more independent in your own learning and to develop your assessment skills.
  • Preparation of the written honours thesis.

The assessment you receive will enable the teaching staff to provide you with feedback on your strong and weak points to enable you to improve your own performance in the future.

Please note that if you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) unit if you would like to find out more. Information about ELS can be found via the following link: www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he.

For more information on assessment, refer to the RMIT Assessment Processes policy.
