Purpose of the Program

Civil engineering involves the planning, design, construction, supervision, management and maintenance of the infrastructure projects necessary for the functioning of our modern community. Over time, civil engineering has been divided into a number of major fields including structural, geotechnical, water resources and transport. The modern civil engineer must also be capable of working on multidisciplinary projects. Graduates are employed as project managers, design engineers, construction managers, environmental engineers and engineering asset managers.

The key objectives of the Civil and Infrastructure engineering program are to:

  • develop a sustainability framework for engineering decision-making
  • develop personal and professional graduate capabilities in sustainability, problem-solving and decision-making, technical competence, communication and teamwork
  • encourage collaboration as a powerful way of helping you and your fellow students to be more effective learners, and staff to be more effective teachers.

Project-based learning is the dominant teaching method adopted for the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours) , with a strong focus on sustainability and technical competence included in each semester.

Themes -Years 1 to 4 

Year themes are used to focus the attention of you and the staff on the different aims of, and aspects in, each of the four years of the program.

Year 1: Developing commitment and connectivity

The aim in Year 1 is to assist you to connect with who you are, the university and the profession you have chosen to enter.

Year 2: Covering the big, theoretical ideas

This is the year in which you will be learning the fundamentals of civil engineering. The emphasis is on gaining conceptual understanding and quantification to a level appropriate to the task.

Year 3: Real world applications

You will use the theories developed in Year 2 to tackle designs and challenges based on real world applications.

Year 4:  Connecting to your future career

You will undertake a capstone experience in the final year courses OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B, in which you will conduct a research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination).

This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the City Campus. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

Articulation and pathways

Credit agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification.

Entrance requirements

Very Important: This plan is being phased out.  

BH077 - Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure)(Honours) plan has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — A study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods (Any) or Maths: Specialist Maths; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

External Accreditation

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours) is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This means that the program is internationally recognised and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world. Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours) are eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.

Industry Links

The School of Engineering has an Industry Advisory Committee for the Civil and Infrastructure program, and strong links are maintained with industry, organisations and government departments concerned with civil engineering. As members of the Industry Advisory Committee, employers and professionals from these areas have contributed to both the initial development and ongoing improvement of this program.  Their involvement ensures that the program remains relevant to your needs as a graduate, and to the needs of graduate employers.

Many of the teaching staff within the program are (or have been) practising industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment and networks.

These networks are further enhanced by the School's Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program, which provides you with an opportunity to experience project-based teaching modes in a number of courses.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services 

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. Through our document delivery service, you can also request items from any library in the world.
