Approach to learning and assessment

In the engineering part of the program, project-based learning is the dominant teaching paradigm, focused in a spine of Engineering Design courses in each semester of the program. Sustainability concepts provide an essential aspect of the framework for decision making in this new program. You will develop your graduate capabilities through successively more complex projects across the breadth of industry sectors within chemical engineering, including waste water treatment, biotechnology, polymer production, minerals processing, and oil and gas processing. These projects will include all aspects of project design, i.e. the technical, environmental, social and sustainability aspects.

In the business part of the program, a range of teaching approaches will be used in addition to lectures to help you in developing your knowledge and generic capabilities. You will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning in a mature and independent way. You will also be encouraged to develop flexible and independent learning techniques and apply theory to solve business problems. The teaching approaches include: 

  • Case-based learning, which engages you in critical thinking and decision making about realistic problems in a business discipline
  • Project based learning, which engages you in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities
  • Problem-based learning, which engages you in problem analysis, research and provision of solutions
  • Cooperative learning, which enables you to work in collaborative or team-based tasks
  • Reflective learning, which allows you to reflect on your learning experiences

Class presentations, group assignments are used extensively in the program to develop personal qualities including clear thinking and resourcefulness and to extend your professional skills to enable you to work in a team and perform under pressure. 

Assessments in the program are designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program depending on the objectives and desired learning outcomes for each course. Assessment in this program may include:

  • Formal examinations: which provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding  of fundamental principles to either practical or theoretical issues;
  • Assignments and projects: may be completed individually or in teams. They will provide you with opportunities to develop your abilities in communication, research and analysis, and problem solving;
  • Research projects: which assess your ability to assimilate, analyse, critically reflect on information, and your written communication skills;
  • In-class tests: which provide you with timely feedback on your understanding within a course and allow feedback to assist you in further developing your skills and capabilities during the semester;
  • Formal presentations: enable the development of verbal communication skills and organisational abilities;
  • Portfolio: which enables you to report and reflect what you have learnt and to keep collection of a range of models, examples, articles and websites that you will take forward as a resource in your professional life;
  • Design project: which assess your ability to integrate, apply, analyse the technical information and communicate through written reports. 

The Year Themes
Year themes are used to focus the attention of staff and students on the different aims of and aspects in each of the five years of the program:

Year 1: developing commitment in each student
In first year, the aim is to assist you make the transition to a university-style of education, and to start the process of making you think like engineers. At the end of the year, you should be able to confidently describe the role of chemical engineers in industry, and the skills needed to be successful in such a role, and have a commitment to become such an engineer. Introductory business courses delivered in this year will help you to understand and appreciate the business perspectives to the process industry. 

Year 2: the core technical concepts
This is the year in which you will learn the main conceptual ideas in chemical engineering, where the “core content” is taught. The emphasis is on conceptual understanding and quantification to a level appropriate to the task. Mathematical and scientific rigour is important, but no more so than practical application. Business courses included in this year help to introduce important concepts in marketing, accounting and organisational behaviour.

Year 3: the core business concepts
This year focuses mainly on developing your understanding of more core business concepts such as economics, law and leadership. Technical skill development is achieved by extending the concepts and skills introduced in years 1 and 2.

Year 4: extension and application
This year will extend your knowledge of some core materials in engineering to relate to processes rather than principles i.e. industry connections become much more explicit. Some options will be available to allow you to specialise in a particular field of chemical engineering. At the end of this year, you should have sufficient skills and confidence to perform as a junior engineer in a plant, eg through vacation work. Options will also be available to specialise in various business majors such as accounting, marketing, international management and logistics management.

Year 5: preparing for the workforce
In the first semester of fifth year, you can choose to be based in the workforce, doing engineering tasks under the guidance of both an industry person and an academic. You will, at the same time, maintain some studies. The major team-based design project will take place, and the emphasis will be on providing enhanced courses that build on streams developed in the earlier years. Further opportunities will be available to specialise in various business majors mentioned above.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and
  • these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL capstone experience may be in a simulated workplace environment.

The following two 12 CP core course include WIL activities where 50% or more of the assessment involves assessors from a WIL partner organisation:

  • OENG1166 Introduction to Professional Engineering Practice where you will participate in an "Engineers Without Borders (EWB)" project which is focussed on sustainable development as identified by EWB and community organisations. 
  • OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B where you will work under the guidance of a professional engineer who may be from industry or be an academic or research staff member. You will apply your technical knowledge, research, design and professional engineering skills to either discipline specific, or cross disciplinary engineering problems, through robust research and established engineering design processes. 

In addition to these courses you are strongly recommended to undertake at least 10 weeks of engineering work experience supervised by a professional engineer. If your work experience meets the requirements it may be assessed concurrently with your work experience as part of courses such as 

  • OENG1165 Professional Engineering Experience

You can enrol in OENG1165 while you are undertaking engineering work experience at any time during your program as a University elective course or you can enrol in it as a technical option course in some programs in your final year.

The designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses as part of the Bachelor of Business Management program in this program are BUSM3125 Strategy (12 credit points) and BUSM4177 Leadership (12 credit points). These courses will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context. 

In particular, you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and
  • be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that includes industry feedback.

These learning opportunities may be in the form of industry-based projects, simulations or placements.

For students who commence their study in this program from 1 January 2016 onwards, please note that some courses listed in this structure will have their course marks count toward your program's weighted average mark. Your weighted average mark will determine the honours level of your award once you have completed the program. If a course counts toward your weighted average mark, that fact will be stated in its course guide. In Enrolment Online, after you completed your course enrolment, you will be notified which of the enrolled courses will count toward the weighted average mark.

Very Important: This plan is being phased out

BH085CEHDD - Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business (Management) plan has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022. The plan will be taught out to current students until semester 2, 2028. If you are unable to complete your program by the end of 2028, you may consider applying to other programs within RMIT subject to entrance requirements. You may also consider applying to one of the new single degree offerings:
