Approach to learning and assessment

Several courses in the program are delivered online, rather than on-campus, and you are likely to find that other courses transition to online delivery as you progress through the program.

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)

Classes are taught using a combination of lecture, seminar, tutorial, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions and site visits. You are expected to be responsible for the completion of all out of class learning activities which may require extra reading of both library and online materials. Lectures are not compulsory, however if you miss lectures you must ensure that you avail yourself of any information provided in those lectures.

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and may include class tests, essays/reports, oral class presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments (for example design and build) and end of semester examinations. Components of the assessment for each course may be found in their relevant course guide.

Bachelor of Business (Management)

During the program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches in the courses you undertake. In many cases, the approach reflects the unique aims of each course; specifically the knowledge capabilities and generic capabilities. As a student, you will be exposed to not only teaching but also learning. It is important for you to note that you will be treated as an ‘adult learner’. This means you are expected to take responsibility for your own learning in a mature and independent way.  Your interests and the value of this program to your future career prospects are enhanced by your engagement in learning activities. A range of teaching approaches is used in addition to lectures. These include methods such as :

  • Case-based learning engages you in critical thinking and decision making about realistic problems in a business discipline
  • Project based learning engage you in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities
  • Problem-based learning engages you in problem analysis, research and provision of solutions
  • Cooperative learning enables you to work in collaborative or team-based tasks
  • Reflective learning allows you to reflect on your learning experiences

The objective is to encourage flexible and independent learning and to develop students who not only understand the theory and concepts, but can also readily apply it.
Class presentations and group assignments are used to extend your professional skills and enable you to work in a team.

Assessment in the BBus (Mgt) is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program since the assessment you receive will be appropriate to the objectives and student learning outcomes for each course.  Successfully completing the assessment tasks ensures the professional accounting bodies and prospective employers of a level of achievement in the capabilities outlined in the program. Assessment in this program may include:

  • Formal examinations: to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of fundamental principles to either practical or theoretical issues;
  • Assignments and projects: may be completed individually or in teams.  They will provide you with opportunities to develop your abilities in communication, research and analysis, and problem solving;
  • Research projects: which assess your ability to assimilate, analyse, critically reflect on information and your written communication skills;
  • In-class tests: to provide you with timely feedback on your understanding within a course and allow feedback to assist you in further developing your skills and capabilities during the semester;
  • Formal presentations: enable the development of verbal communication skills and organisational abilities;
  • Portfolio – enable you to report and reflect what you have learnt and to keep a collection of a range of models, examples, articles and websites that you will take forward as a resource in your professional life.

Please note that if you have a disability, long-term medical condition and/ or mental health condition ELS can support you to create reasonable adjustments to ensure you can participate in your studies. You can contact the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) unit if you would like to find out more. Information about ELS can be found at: www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-services/equitable-learning

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to Apply for credit.

Work integrated learning

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience.  Work Integrated Learning will be undertaken in many courses in your program. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and  demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities and receive feedback through assessment tasks; and
  • complete these activities in real or simulated work contexts or situations.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be in a simulated workplace learning environment.

The following two core courses include WIL activities where 50% or more of the assessment involves assessors from a WIL partner organisation:

  • OENG1166 Introduction to Professional Engineering Practice where you will participate in an "Engineers Without Borders (EWB)" project which is focused on sustainable development as identified by EWB and community organisations.
  • OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B where you will work under the guidance of a professional engineer who may be from industry or be an academic or research staff member. You will apply your technical knowledge, research, design and professional engineering skills to either discipline specific, or cross disciplinary engineering problems, through robust research and established engineering design processes.

In addition to these courses you are strongly recommended to undertake at least 10 weeks of engineering work experience supervised by a professional engineer. If your work experience meets the requirements it may be assessed concurrently with your work experience as part of courses such as

  • OENG1165 Professional Engineering Experience

You can enrol in OENG1165 while you are undertaking engineering work experience at any time during your program as a University elective course or you can enrol in it as a technical option course in your final year.

Bachelor of Business (Management)

The designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses in this portion of the program are BUSM3125 Strategy (12 credit points) and BUSM4177 Leadership (12 credit points). These courses will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context.

In particular, you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and
  • be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that includes industry feedback.

These learning opportunities may be in the form of industry-based projects, simulations or placements.

Program Structure

For students who commence their study in this program from 1 January 2016 onwards, please note that some courses listed in this structure will have their course marks count toward your program's weighted average mark. Your weighted average mark will determine the honours level of your award once you have completed the program. If a course counts toward your weighted average mark, that fact will be stated in its course guide. In Enrolment Online, after you completed your course enrolment, you will be notified which of the enrolled courses will count toward the weighted average mark.

For more information about the weighted average mark, please click here.

To graduate you must complete the following:

All courses listed may not be available each semester
