Purpose of the Program

The purpose of this program is to: 

  • to develop knowledge in the fundamentals of physics and skills in applying this knowledge to novel problems and situations. In particular you will have a solid foundation in the theoretical aspects of physics. You will develop strong mathematical and modelling capabilities, report writing and communication and laboratory experience.
  • to develop an ability to apply scientific principles and practice in commercial enterprises and research establishments in a safe and environmentally and socially acceptable manner.
  • provide learning experiences that provide you, as a graduate of this program, with the knowledge and skills essential for a professional career in electronic and communication engineering.
  • prepare you, on graduation from this program, to be ready to take up employment in electronic and communication engineering and related industries, including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, electrical, computing, resource, defence, and primary industries.

Articulation and pathways

Pathways

Graduates will able to proceed to a coursework Masters degree in Electronic or Communication Engineering or related fields, subject to meeting the general admission criteria.

Outstanding graduates from this program may be able to proceed to a research degree including Masters by Research or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), subject to meeting the general admission criteria.

Students who apply to transfer to one of the single degrees that are components of this double degree program, will be eligible for credit for any equivalent courses in the single degree structure, and may transfer credit for any other courses that can meet elective requirements of the single degree structure.

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 20 in Physics; and study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

Graduates of this program are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics (and associated overseas bodies).

This program is fully accredited by the Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Full membership as a Professional Engineer may be obtained after an appropriate period of professional practice.  

Engineers Australia represents Australia as a signatory to the Washington Accord.  Many other countries are signatories to this international agreement for Professional Engineers.  Qualifications accredited or recognised by other signatories are recognised by each signatory as being substantially equivalent to accredited or recognised qualifications within its own jurisdiction.  See http://www.ieagreements.org/Washington-Accord/signatories.cfm

The school has extensive links with industry, particularly through research projects, and consulting.  In a number of cases industry has provided direct support by donating laboratory equipment.

You may be able to undertake an industry sponsored design project in your final year (as part of Engineering Capstone Project Part A and Part B).

You also have the opportunity of undertaking an Industry Placement for six or twelve months either locally as advertised by local businesses, or internationally through the RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP) http://www.rmit.edu.au/riierp.  This may not count towards completion of your degree but should lead to better employment.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Resources available from the Library
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering has many laboratories, often with specialised equipment, to support the relevant teaching and learning activities, and most of these labs have been upgraded in recent years, to ensure that you have access to modern computers and equipment that you are likely to use in industry.
