Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Science (Dean's Scholar, Analytics) (Honours) is a research-oriented, four-year undergraduate program in science which includes an integrated Honours year. After graduating from this program, you will be qualified to apply your advanced knowledge and research capability in your chosen discipline to professional work or further learning. This program is a preferred pathway into higher degrees by research such as a PhD program.

The program will:

  • enable you to become highly employable in the field of mathematics, statistics and cognate fields;
  • give you a sound knowledge and skills of both fundamental and advanced mathematical and statistical theory;
  • expose you to a wide range of mathematical and statistical models, programming environments, approaches and softwares
  • enable you  to select and apply appropriate mathematical and statistical methodologies, techniques and softwares to a wide range of problems
  • expose you to related fields of study, such as environmental modelling, finance, marketing, computer science, data analytics, or information security
  • provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills and abilities to operate effectively in professional settings that involve mathematical and statistical expertise. These include communication skills, technology literacy, and the ability to work in a team and interact with others

Analytics is an established quantitative field within both industry and higher education. With exponential growth in available data, the analytics discipline has emerged as a key field requiring the skilled analyst. This program provides you with complementary skills in analytics, tapping into studies in statistics, operations research, computer science, information technologies, business, economics, finance and marketing. Combining the expertise of several schools across the STEM College and the College of Business and Law, the program prepares you for statistical analysis in the business world. The flexibility of the program, allowing you to choose from a diverse range of electives, combined with a core of statistics and operations research, will enable you to specialise in the areas that will assist you in the future.

A strong focus of the program is consulting and work-integrated learning. MATH2302 Analytics in Industry 1 serves as a semester-long experience combining work-integrated learning with applied research bringing all your learning together in a summative and practical way. This assists you through exposure to industry projects and problems that provide you with hands on examples for the development of your analytic capabilities. With data-driven decisions now a fundamental part of business operations, this program provides you with the platform to be a business-ready problem solver.

The capstone experience for this program consists of the Science Honours Project Courses (Science Honours Project 1, 2, 3 and 4). The honours project is a culmination and application of knowledge and skills from your prior studies. Regular interactions with your supervisor(s) will allow you to obtain technical advice, plan and carry out an advanced project and get feedback on your progress. You will propose solutions to real world problems using the knowledge and competencies acquired during your program.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification.

If you have completed the first year of the Bachelor of Analytics undergraduate program or an equivalent program with a GPA of at least 3.5, you will be eligible to apply for transfer into the second year of the BSc(Dean’s Scholar, Analytics)(Hons) program.

Successful completion of this program provides you with pathways into masters by coursework, masters by research and PhD programs.

Entrance requirements

This program is not open for new intake.

This program is intended for capable and highly motivated students who want research training through hands on participation in research projects throughout the program.  The number of places in the program is limited so entry is competitive. Prior tertiary study must show evidence of academic success.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education, or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in one of Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English. 

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

The Mathematical Discipline in the School of Science is formally linked to industry through its Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff. Members of the IAC provide valuable input and are a major driver for change in the school's programs, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities, the use of state-of-the-art software and, very importantly, support for the introduction of work integrated learning (WIL) and global engagement.  Feedback from the IAC has been fundamental to the design of the Bachelor of Science (Dean's Scholar, Analytics) (Honours) program as a multidisciplinary degree based on a core of mathematics and statistics, computing and business studies.

Graduates of this program may be eligible to become a member of the Statistical Society of Australia, Australian Society For Operations Research, the American Statistical Association and The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

The objective of the Statistical Society of Australia is to further the study, application and good practice of statistical theory and methods in all branches of learning and enterprise. The primary objective of accreditation is to indicate to the non-statistical community that the holder has achieved an acceptable level of professional competence in the understanding and application of statistical methods and is bound by the Code of Conduct of the SSAI . The American Statistical Association is the world’s largest community of statisticians, and supports excellence in the development, application, and dissemination of statistical science through meetings, publications, membership services, education, accreditation, and advocacy.

The Australian Society For Operations Research serves the professional needs of OR analysts, managers, students and educators by publishing a National Bulletin and National and Chapter Newsletters. The society also serves as a focal point for operations researchers to communicate with each other and to reach out to other professional societies. The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences is the leading association for professionals in the fields of operations research, management science, and analytics.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library.
