Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Science (Dean's Scholar, Geospatial Science) (Honours) degree will enable you to apply scientific principles in professional practice as well as research.

You will gain a sound repertoire of scientific knowledge and skills, which will provide you with a foundation for a professional career in Geospatial Science. Examples include careers in cartography, mapping, surveying, measurement and geographical visualisation.

You will develop:

  • knowledge and fundamental skills essential for all aspects of work and research in the geospatial sciences;
  • knowledge in all areas of geospatial science including cartography, mapping, surveying, measurement, and geographical visualisation;
  • practical skills developed through field work, presentations, projects and reports;
  • a foundation for a career in geospatial sciences and opportunities to take on a leadership role in a changing global market shaped by economic, cultural, environmental and regulatory dynamics.

The capstone experience for this program consists of the Honours Project Courses (Science Honours Project 1, 2, 3 and 4). The honours project is a culmination and application of knowledge and skills from your prior studies. Regular interactions with your supervisor(s) will allow you to obtain technical advice, to construct a project plan and get feedback on your progress. You will propose solutions to real world problems using the knowledge and competencies acquired during your program.

While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

Articulation and pathways

If you have completed the first year of the BSc(Geo) undergraduate program or an equivalent program with a GPA of at least 3.5, you will be eligible to apply for transfer into the second year of the BSc(Dean's Scholar, Geospatial Science)(Honours) program.

This program is a preferred pathway into higher degree by research programs such as PhD and Masters by research programs. You may receive up to 96 credit points towards an appropriate two-year Masters by coursework program on completion of the BSc(Dean's Scholar, Geospatial Science)(Honours) program.

Entrance requirements

This program is intended for capable and highly motivated students who want research training through hands on participation in research projects throughout the program.  The number of places in the program is limited so entry is competitive. Prior tertiary study must show evidence of academic success.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 25 in mathematical methods (CAS) or specialist mathematics, and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

Whilst this program is not accredited by an external body, graduates are eligible for admission to the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute of Australia (SSSI).

Graduates may also be eligible for membership of the Mapping Sciences Institute of Australia (MSIA) and for the Institution of Surveyors (Victoria) given certain subject choices. Please discuss this with your program leader.

The School of Science has extensive links with industry across all aspects of this program, including cartography, spatial sciences and surveying.

An Industry Advisory Committee comprising senior industry figures representing the spatial sciences meets regularly to ensure the relevance of the Geospatial Science program to industry. Industry partners enjoy a strong link with RMIT, with a number of opportunities for students to participate in industry related teaching and learning activities, such as field and project work.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Resources available from the Library:
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.
Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The School also has many computing laboratories, which are equipped with modern computers and accessories and supported by state-of-the-art Geospatial Science software. RMIT has a planned budget to ensure that all computers are upgraded on a regular basis.
