Approach to learning and assessment

This program is offered primarily in a face-to-face studio learning environment and is delivered in a range of formats that may include key project milestone tutorials, guided self directed studio practice, masterclasses designed to complement your progress and give you additional access to industry and practice experts related to key progress milestones of your project, workshops with staff, program alumni and guests, project supervisions, critiques and reviews, field trips and WIL.

The dynamic learning experiences intend to simulate key formats of developing, presenting and communicating your work found in practice. The varied nature of the learning activities offered demands your ongoing participation to achieve the program objectives. You will receive regular reviews of progress during the program and formative feedback on your academic progress.

You can expect to attend open studios, critiques and assessments, course lectures, guest presentations and program affiliated events to support and enhance your learning experience. Your participation in the program will involve a high level of self-directed research, experimentation, construction, prototyping and presentation in a variety of media and mediums. You will participate in a range of dynamic assessment structures that align with industry practice.

You will bring to fulfilment your in-depth knowledge and advanced skills in the research, analysis, evaluation, practice and communication of design, both independently and in collaboration with staff, guest studio leaders, other students and external organisations in either fashion design or a related cross-disciplinary field of research. This will involve a high level of self-directed research, and result in a series of design outcomes demonstrating the results of your research into materials exploration, construction techniques, design development, concept development, and research presentation and communication. This program will enable you to articulate your position within the field and community of fashion practice and deepen your understanding of its social and cultural context. You will develop a critical understanding of different modes of disseminating fashion and appropriate methodologies for its public communication.

The major project in your final semester will be a capstone experience designed as a culmination of your learning throughout the program and provide segue to your future career pathways of further study.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • Undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • Interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities
  • Complete these activities in real work contexts or situations.

These interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning. Any or all of these aspects of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences may be simulated.

The Bachelor of Fashion (Design)(Honours) program has a strong set of relationships across a range of industry, research and community partners. You will engage in industry in a variety of different ways, work with industry partners and explore different discipline contexts and markets for your practice. Your WIL activity occurs through the regular engagement, teaching and learning you receive from academic and professional staff members in the program who are practitioners in the field. In addition this program builds towards a key practice experience through the inclusion of guest international and local practitioners and industry experts in relevant fields. Their activity may include participation in the review and critique of your design practice, their collaboration on program wide activities and projects, delivery of custom masterclasses relevant to industry practice and enhancing your learning experience as well as direct collaboration with students for specific projects, assessments, events and activities that contextualise their practice in industry.

In semester 2, all students will undertake an honours program major project and opt for the specific industry or related discipline context or market for their practice. These courses cater for students who would like to produce commercial collections for contemporary fashion makers, cross discipline projects working with other disciplines and industries or a placement that will require a concise design project as a response to working in industry.

The designated WIL course is one of:

  • GRAP2845 Honours Fashion Design Project
  • GRAP2844 Honours Fashion Design Collection
  • GRAP2841 Honours Fashion Design Placement

The Honours Fashion Design Project, Collection or Placement course options are simulated and direct WIL experiences. In the Placement experience option students will work in a self initiated placement and then produce a design project in response to this WIL. Project or collection options enable students to collaborate and work with industry practitioners and partners, and produce a fashion design collection or project situated in a clear industry or practice context.

In addition option courses in the program offer relevant specialist industry techniques and cater for a variety of industry contexts and markets. There is further WIL opportunities for specialised placements in the program option course GRAP2683 Fashion and Textiles Industry Placement Project.
