Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) provides you with knowledge and skills in the major disciplines of Laboratory Medicine. This program with its professional practice component is designed to provide a qualification which will fully prepare you for employment in diagnostic pathology or medical research,  locally, nationally and internationally.

The Foundations of Health first year block will instill fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities, particularly our First Nations peoples. This common first year block gives you the skills to pursue a career in Laboratory Medicine and also prepares you to transfer to other programs offered by School of Health and Biomedical Sciences.

The core body of knowledge provides in-depth theory and practical skills in all the foundation clinical specialty areas of laboratory medicine with specialisation in two major areas of study based on your career interests.  It also includes problem solving and research skill development in advanced laboratory medicine.

Throughout the program, you will build skills and knowledge molecular diagnostics which will provide an overview of the detection and application of biochemical and molecular biology techniques (DNA or RNA) to provide clinical information in the study of human diseases, including infectious disease, inherited conditions and cancer. You will also learn about clinical immunology and pathology, gaining an understanding of the diagnosis and management of patients with diseases or disease processes that result from disturbed immunological or pathophysiological mechanisms.

The learning activities and experiences in this program are designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching methods may include lectorials, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practical and laboratory sessions, site visits and provision of online materials.

Professional Practice Laboratory Medicine 1 (MED2202) will provide a 16-week placement in industry where you will gain competency skills and experience required to work in diagnostic pathology.

The Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) provides you with a capstone experience, Advanced Laboratory Medicine 1 (MEDS2203), which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.

While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, several courses in the program are delivered online, rather than on-campus, while other courses are delivered via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation

Graduates of the RMIT AD012, AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science will be guaranteed entry into the BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) program and receive credit to a value of 108 credit points (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points)

Graduates of the RMIT AD012, AD012P24 Associate Degree in Applied Science (Biomedicine option) will be guaranteed entry into the BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) program and receive credit to a value of 156 credit points.

Graduates of the RMIT C5388 Diploma of Laboratory Technology will be guaranteed entry into the BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) program and receive credit to a value of 96 credit points (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points)

NB: While the total value of the credit offered exceeds 1 standard year of full-time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 3 years.

Pathways

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.  As a successful graduate of this program, you may (upon application) be eligible to proceed to a research degree by Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), subject to meeting the general admission criteria.  Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each programs entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Biology or Chemistry; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of: Maths: General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or Physics, or equivalent studies. 

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

The Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) is accredited with conditions by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) https://www.aims.org.au/.

Industry Links

This program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. These committees help inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
