Approach to learning and assessment

The program has been developed through an extensive analysis of current developments in higher education where experiential learning research and theory are examined with respect to the ways in which learning can be enhanced in curriculum development, assessment, and student and staff development (Kolb & Kolb 2005) . Throughout the BBus (Ent) program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches. In many cases, the approach reflects the unique aims of each course; specifically knowledge capabilities and generic capabilities. You will be exposed to not only teaching but also learning. You will be treated as ‘adult learners’: expected to take responsibility for your own learning in a mature and independent way. Your future personal and career prospects will be enhanced by active engagement in learning activities.

A range of teaching approaches is used in addition to lectures and tutorials, including practical projects, self-managed learning activities, and work integrated learning. An objective is to encourage flexible and independent learning, and to assist you in developing an understanding of theory and concepts, and how to apply it readily.

Class presentations and group assignments are used extensively to develop personal qualities including critical thinking and resourcefulness, and to extend professional skills to enable you to work effectively in a team and to perform under pressure.

Assessment in the BBus (Ent) is designed to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. Various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program consistent with objectives and student learning outcomes for each course. Successfully completing assessment tasks ensures that a level of achievement in regard to the capabilities outlined in the program has been attained.
Assessment may include:

  • Formal examinations: that will provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of fundamental principles to either practical or theoretical issues;
  • Assignments and projects: that may be completed individually or in teams. These will provide you with opportunities to develop your abilities in communication, research and analysis, and problem solving;
  • Research projects: which assess ability to assimilate, critical analyse and reflect on information as well as written communication skills;
  • In-class tests: provide you with timely feedback on your understanding of course content and allow feedback to assist you in further developing your skills and capabilities during the semester;
  • Formal presentations: enable the development of verbal communication skills, and organisational abilities;
  • Reflective papers: where you reflect on what you have learnt and the methods utilised to enhance learning.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he
