Purpose of the Program

This program has been designed:

  1. To produce graduates who have the skills, knowledge and capabilities to work effectively as specialist and generalist teachers in primary schools.
  2. To produce graduates who have current curricular, pedagogical and assessment knowledge and can contribute to its development within professional communities.
  3. To produce graduates who are flexible and skilled in performing their educational role with children within a range of educational settings.
  4. To produce graduates who are able to provide peer support, leadership and direction within a range of educational and community settings.
  5. To assist you in the development of practical skills in teaching and in engaging children in learning.
  6. To provide a pre-service teacher education that extensively covers the skills and knowledge essential for a 21st Century society.
  7. To deliver a program that meets real world needs and is workplace relevant.

Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, such as a Master of Education, subject to program entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Entrance requirements for local applicants:

Current Year 12 applicants require prerequisite units 1 & 2 General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods, or units 3 & 4 Mathematics (any). Units 3 & 4 a study score of at least  30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

Non Year 12 applicants can apply and may be required to have relevant employment or evidence of experience and/ or ability to meet the demands of the program.

The application procedure is through a VTAC Application.

Entrance requirements for International on-shore applicants:

  • IELTS – 6.5+ (no band less than 6.0) OR
  • TOEFL – Paper-Based = 580+ (TWE 4.5+) OR
  • TOEFL – Computer-Based = 237+ (TWE 4.5+) OR
  • REW – English for Academic Purposes Advanced 1 & 2*

* Effective from March 2011, the 10-week Advanced Plus course will replace the 5-week Advanced 2 course

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation

The Bachelor of Education (BP046) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (www.vit.vic.edu.au).

In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional Registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit it to the Institute. Industry Links

The School of Education has an established reputation for providing educational and vocational leadership in creating knowledge for the future through work with client groups within primary, secondary and tertiary education, communities and enterprises. Through the established Program Advisory Group, the School gains advice on emergent issues within the sectors of education from industry representatives. These biannual meetings and other forums throughout the year inform the School's programs to be responsive to sectorial needs, issues and opportunities within different sectors of the education industry as they relate to curriculum renewal and design.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

Course materials (printed course notes, textbooks, reference books and recommended reading) are available from the RMIT Bookshop and the RMIT University Library.

The Bundoora West Campus has good  Library holdings and other IT and specialist resources to support the students of this program. The development of information literacy is an essential aspect of lifelong and life-wide learning and will be incorporated within programs in line with the Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy Framework (2004). These standards will be developed through the information experiences provided as a matter of course within the program as well as through dedicated activities conducted in conjunction with the library. Library sessions will be a continuing feature of each program taught into a key course in each program. They will emphasise the ability to understand and analyse a research question; awareness of the range of information resources available for searching scholarly literature, including specialist and generalist databases; the ability to search and modify searches in key resources; knowledge of issues around the access to and management of information through programs such as Endnote.
