Purpose of the Program
The objectives of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) program are to:
- provide you with a broad, coherent and detailed body of knowledge and theory related to the global aviation industry
- develop your skills to critically review and analyse all aspects of the aviation industry
- prepare you to work individually and in teams to solve aviation industry problem
- produce graduates that can communicate professionally to diverse aviation industry stakeholders
Your studies will cover all aspects of the aviation industry, such as:
- airline operations planning and management
- airline maintenance management and supervision
- airport landside operations
- airport airside operations
- airport planning and management
- aviation safety management
- airline strategies, finance, and traffic data
- human factors concepts and applications
as well as technical and contemporary issues in the aviation industry, such as systems, sustainability and the environment.
Your studies will include lectures, presentations, topic learning guides, problem-based learning, readings, case-studies on contemporary aviation-industry related issues, group and online discussions and where possible will include guest lectures by industry experts. There will be ongoing assessment throughout each semester; which may include assignments, examinations, online discussions, oral presentations and reports. The approach to assessments throughout the program is intended to develop a basis for independent lifelong learning and to develop high-level communication skills that will enable you to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas.
The program requires in-person attendance, but also takes advantage of the capabilities of Canvas, the online learning management system that is available to all students and provides scope for collaboration and remote access. Some courses are delivered online.
The program includes the capstone Aviation Industry Project which is intended to provide you with the opportunity to undertake a project focusing on a real-world aviation industry problem or issue and where you are able apply your critical thinking, judgment, problem-solving skills, and industry knowledge. The project is supervised by an RMIT University staffmember and/or an industry-based expert. You will also have access to the "myRMIT Studies" Canvas portal.
Graduates of the program have obtained junior management and supervisory positions with air services providers, airlines and airport organisations located throughout the world. Graduates may also undertake postgraduate studies in aviation.
While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.
Articulation and pathways
Advanced standing will be given into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) program for students who have successfully completed relevant approved programs prior to entry into the RMIT program. Entrance requirements
Academic entrance requirement:
Applicants will be eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) program if they have either:
- Singapore- Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Levels with minimum 3 points for 3 H2 subjects; or
- Successful completion of other qualifications equivalent to Australian Year 12 as listed on the Country Equivalency web page.
Prerequisite(s):
- A minimum of 60% or C in Mathematics subject for GCE A Levels; or
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in Mathematics (any), or equivalent
Applicants will also be eligible for entry as well as for advanced standing, if they have completed qualifications from one of the following institutions:
- Nanyang Polytechnic;
- Ngee Ann Polytechnic;
- Republic Polytechnic;
- Temasek Polytechnic;
- Singapore Polytechnic;
- SIM Global Education; or
- Air Transport Training College

English entrance requirement:
Applicants who have achieved one of following will meet the English language entry criteria to the programs:
- C6 or better in English or Literature in English
- C or better in General Paper for AS level
- Achieve minimum C grade in H2 subject (excluding language subjects and Mathematics and Music) for A level English.
- Have successfully studied Singapore Cambridge ‘A’ levels at a Singaporean high school for at least 2 years.
All other applicants must meet one of the following:
- IELTS (Academic) - 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
- TOEFL –Paper-Based = 580 (TWE 4.5)
- TOEFL - internet-Based (iBT) = 92, with minimum of 20 in all sections
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) PTE(A) = 58 (no communication band less than 50);
- Cambridge English (Advanced CAE) (up to 2014): 58 with no less than ‘borderline’ in each skill;
- Cambridge English (Advanced CAE) 2015 onwards: 176 with no less than 169 in any component;
- RMIT English Worldwide (REW) Advanced Plus or equivalent;
- Successful completion of a recognised approved Diploma qualification or higher, where the language of instruction was English.

This program is not subject to external accreditation, and there is no accreditation body for this program.
The School has expanding Australian and international links with the Aviation industry. These have grown out of relationships originally built around the School’s graduate programs in Aviation Management.
Key stakeholders in the aviation industry have participated in the original development of this program, and industry is playing a continuing role in ensuring that it remains relevant and graduates have strong career paths.
