Purpose of the Program

The program BP083P20 Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathematics & Statistics) will:

  • enable you to become highly employable in the field of mathematics, statistics and cognate fields;
  • give you a sound knowledge and skills of both fundamental and advanced mathematical and statistical theory;
  • expose you to a wide range of mathematical and statistical models, programming environments, approaches and softwares
  • enable you  to select and apply appropriate mathematical and statistical methodologies, techniques and softwares to a wide range of problems
  • expose you to related fields of study, such as environmental modelling, finance, marketing, computer science, data analytics, or information security
  • provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills and abilities to operate effectively in professional settings that involve mathematical and statistical expertise. These include communication skills, technology literacy, and the ability to work in a team and interact with others

Year 1 is designed  to build a solid background of mathematical and statistical knowledge, conceptual and analytical skills that are essential for Years 2 & 3 in the programs. It also includes an overview of the different components of applied mathematics and statistics which can be explored in depth in subsequent years.

In Year 2 and Year 3 of BP083 Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathematics and Statistics) there is a large number of option courses which allow you to tailor your studies to your areas of interests including finance, marketing, computer science, information security, biology and ecology modelling, operations research, optimisation and analytics. You are also able to select two University-wide option courses. In year two and three you have the opportunity of undertaking a student mobility program overseas, either in industry or in a partner university.

MATH2197 serves as a capstone experience where you can integrate and apply knowledge and skills learned throughout your program as you transition from study to industry. You will participate in a group project or industry placement under the supervision of the teaching team and where applicable under the supervision of a representative from a partner institution or industry. Regular interactions with your supervisor(s) will allow you to obtain technical advice, to construct a milestones plan and get feedback on your progress. You will respond to real world problems using the knowledge and competencies acquired during your program to propose solutions.

MATH2197 and its pre-cursor, MATH2196 are the designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses for BP083.

This program is delivered on campus; some courses may be available online.

Articulation and pathways

There are currently no specific VE qualifications that articulate into the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics).

If you have successfully completed this program, you can apply for entry into BH012 Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathematics & Statistics) (Honours). This is a possible pathway towards our PhD program, DR222 - PhD (Mathematical Sciences). You may also wish to apply for entry into MC004 Master of Statistics and Operations Research or MC242 Master of Analytics programs after completing your studies. Seek guidance from your Program Coordinator as to your options and directions for further study.

If you have completed the first year of the BSc (Applied Mathematics & Statistics) undergraduate program with a GPA of at least 3.5, you will be eligible to apply for transfer into the second year of the Bachelor of Science (Dean's Scholar, Applied Mathematics and Statistics) (Honours).

External accreditation and industry links

The Mathematical Discipline in the School of Science is formally linked to industry through its Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff. Members of the IAC provide valuable input and are a major driver for change in the school's programs, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities, the use of state-of-the-art software and, very importantly, support for the introduction of work integrated learning (WIL) and global engagement.  Feedback from the IAC has been fundamental to the design of the Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathematics and Statistics) program as a multidisciplinary degree based on a core of mathematics and statistics, computing and business studies.

Graduates of this program may be eligible to become a member of the Statistical Society of Australia, Australian Society For Operations Research, the American Statistical Association and The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

Students who successfully complete four specific statistics courses are granted SAS and RMIT joint certification. The statistics courses are updated annually. Please check eligible courses in your program’s Canvas site.
